Thread Port "problem"

We are using the standard 12005, but some customers have been reluctant
to open this port (or ask their admin to do this).

Could we just as well have chosen port 80?  No problems?
Are there negatives to opening 12005?

I don't know what is the biggest problem: persuading new customers to
use 12005 or have all old customers switch to a new port (or just
agreeing on a new port number!).

What are you doing?  Any comments from your customers?
Do you use 12005 and persuade customers to use it?

You can use port 80 so long as there is no web server on the same
machine. If there is, one server will block the other.

I don't understand why port 12005 is a problem
(and I would stay far away from any of the standard ports)

A port itself does nothing unless there is a "listener" for the port

In any SME you would be surprised just how many ports
need to be be open for applications

Sell your software advising that Port 12005/6 is required
for the database server, there is no technical reason
for them to be shy nor for any network admin to reject it

Aage,

I would strongly advise against using any standard port number.  Port 12005
is registered with iana.org as a DBISAM database server port.

I know, I know.  However, some customers make a fuss about "opening
another port".

Thanks to Eryk, Greg, and Tim!
