Thread Starting Service - System Error #3
Thu, Jul 13 2006 2:26 PMPermanent Link

"Johnnie Norsworthy"
When installing a database server and trying to set it as a service (under
administrator login) at a client's location, I go the following message:

SERVER /INSTALL
NET START SERVER

System Error #3 starting server

I haven't seen this before and was curious what to look for as to the
problem.

Thanks,
Johnnie

Is your service really name "server"? At least under windows XP there is
already a service named server. So net start server tries to start that
service from Microsoft.

Can you start the service via "Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Administrative
Tools -> Services"?

No, my server name is REMSERVER, I was just trying to be generic in my
message.

I'll see if I can start the server with administrative tools.

Thanks!

The exact error message is:

System Error 3 occurred.
The system cannot find the path specified.

I uninstalled the service and then installed it again and it does not appear
on the Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services list.

Anything else I can look into concerning this error and why it isn't
actually installing into the services list?

Thanks,
Johnnie

Why not type in the complete path?  I have noticed that on Win 2003
that browsing to the exe does not seem to work and I get the same error
message you got.  Just typing in the path seems to do the trick,
although I do this directly on the server or via a Terminal Server
connection.

Johnnie,

Did you verify that the service exists at the path that is indicated in the
Services dialog ?

Johnnie,

So, using:

SERVER /INSTALL

by itself doesn't result in the service showing up in the Services dialog ?
The only thing I can think of is that you're trying to install the service
from a non-local drive that cannot be accessed by the System account.  You
can't do that because network drives are not accessible from the special
System account that services run under by default.

I never saw it listed in the services dialog after I did a:
REMSERVER /INSTALL

I installed another office yesterday and had no problem of this kind, so I
don't think my compiled version of the server is the problem. But even given
that I am going to try to install the generic DBISAM Server and see if I
have the same problem.

I am also going to try entering the full path as David suggested.

But I can't do it again until Monday morning because the customer will be in
the software all day.

Thanks,
Johnnie

No, it didn't show up, but there was no error shown.

I think you may be right about the local drive thing because though it is
the server and the physical storage is on that machine the drive icons
appear like network drives, so there may be an issue with mapping. I'll
install the server on the C: drive and see if that does the trick. I am
doing everything remotely, and the system is used all day, so it doesn't
help that I can't quickly try some things until I get it working.

Thanks much.

Moving the database folder to the C: (local, non-mapped) drive did the
trick. I was able to install the service and start it.
