Ok DBMS is old and peeps dont like changes
but whats coming next I dont like it.

http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2008/02/18/stonebraker_dbms_outdated/

Then I'am happy with D7 dBisam 4.22/6 I will no doubt upgrade oneday.
Learning new stuff is hard when you are working on a new project.
I would however like others thoughts on whats proposed in the link.
TIA
Rita

I'd much rather see a rewrite of Windows.

Robert,

<< I'd much rather see a rewrite of Windows. >>

No kidding.  Make it look like the .NET framework in terms of the class
hierarchies, but with support for native compilation.  IOW, make the API
into a class framework instead, without the Windows API still sitting
underneath the whole mess.

Rita,

I read the Stonebraker article, and this bit certainly grabbed my attention:

<< Stonebraker and his group also advocate abandoning SQL >>

Just when I thought I was getting to grips with it. Damn....

And the alternative to SQL is - what? Conversational voice interaction with some sort of
interactive expert system? That would suit me because I'm a terrible typist. But while
this might do well for queries which are browsing for data, maybe an informal approach
doesn't really hack it for updates and deletes? A recipe for mayhem. Or the birth of a
new monster to rival Microsoft's helpful paperclip? Smiley

Cheers,
Dan

Dan,

<< And the alternative to SQL is - what? >>

Well, the obvious problem with any alternative, especially those that
"embed" themselves in the actual language, is who controls it and decides
what changes, etc. ?  I mean, if we're talking about using operators, etc.
in the language itself, then obviously there are going to be differences
between the various languages that require special handling in each
language.  Sounds like a recipe for a single company to take over the
standard and start to screw around with everyone else.

No matter how the "new" data is stored, I can guarantee that that SQL will
be able to access it.
