Thread Installing DBISAM on a Synology NAS
Thu, Aug 18 2011 6:47 PMPermanent Link

Adam H.

Hi Guys,

Just wondering - has anyone attempted to install DBISAM's server (or
EDB) on a Synology NAS device.

I don't have one myself, but it's my understanding they work on a linux
O/S and you can install other things such as SVN servers, etc on them
and was wondering if anyone has, or if it would be possible to do the
same with DBISAM?

Cheers

Adam.

Adam,

I'm reasonably certain it's a no-go : Synology uses either an ARM or PowerPC CPU in there (depending on model) so while it's technically an embedded Linux you need to use their special toolchain to recompile the code into a Synology package that can be installed on NAS.

On 2nd look it seems they do have some x86 models now (running Atom CPU) though it's still running their embedded linux OS. So in theory at least if you can get WINE running on it you might be able to run the dbsrvr - though quick googling did not turn up any hits on wine+synology.

Thanks for your reply. Would we need WINE? Couldn't we use the Linux
distro of the DBISAM server?

Good point - i did not realize there is a linux distro. If you have access to linux version then in theory it should run - though it is embedded version running on the NAS so it's not 100%. Would be interesting experiment.

The only downside is that synology devices are bit pricey - buying an equivalent fanless atom  micro PC/Server would cost 1/2 as much and be fully capable of running a real OS.
