I would say D7 and before and D2006 and after. I'm using D2006 and I have a positive opinion about this release. In my opinion, the "really bad" releases were D8 and D2005 - a real waste of time and money. I'm skipping D2007 and planning on an upgrade when they release the "Update 1" for D2009 or whatever they will call it > Not requiring unicode I remain to be convinced that there is any > benefit to me in upgrading. Although I don't need it at the moment, I'm convinced Unicode is the way to go sooner or later, so I'm starting to prepare myself to that. -- Fernando Dias [Team Elevate] |

The reason I say a second divide is unicode. Although CodeGear are saying the conversion will be easy I'm waiting to see. There may even be some positive benefits in terms of speed since posts seem to indicate that current code will translate back and forth between ansi and unicode. >I would say D7 and before and D2006 and after. I'm using D2006 and I >have a positive opinion about this release. These days when I step back into D6 from D2006 it does feel a bit clunky. >Although I don't need it at the moment, I'm convinced Unicode is the way >to go sooner or later, so I'm starting to prepare myself to that. I'm convinced that at some point we won't have any choice. As I said I'm waiting to find out what the full cost will be to me. When one's available I may download a trial and see just how much of my code (own and 3rd party) compiles. At the end of the day if it gives me as much benefit as Vista I'll just try and ignore it Roy Lambert |

> The reason I say a second divide is unicode. > Although CodeGear are saying the conversion will be easy I'm waiting to see. You are right, I wasn't considering this factor, but it's an important change. I'm also waiting to see how easy it will be to convert existing applications, but for what they are saying it seems it will be easy. Did you see Nick Hodges articles on Unicode? http://dn.codegear.com/article/38437 http://dn.codegear.com/article/38498 > At the end of the day if it gives me as much benefit as Vista I'll just try and ignore it I'm still using Xp for development. I have only one Vista VM to test under Vista, and will continue using Xp for 6 months, at least. -- Fernando Dias [Team Elevate] |

I miss the bloody great book that came with early Delphis. I know everything is in the help somewhere (if only you could find it) but a physical book is a lot easier to browse. I doubt I'm using 50% of the stuff in D2006 simply because I don't know its there. Roy Lambert |
