Have been seriously using Delphi 2006 (Architect) with Patch 2 applied.  Wow!  I have no
experience with it unpatched, apparently is was pretty ordinary.  But as it is, the
product is truly worth every hard earned cent spent on it.

First off, I have all of the code-completion,code-error-squiggly things turned ON.  And
there are no pauses like I always get in D7 while the pascal is being parsed.  It is
unbelievably responsive and the improvements are organically helpful.  I wish I could
write software this brilliantly.

Compile time is almost instantaneous.  IDE loads fast and is very, very stable.  And my
machine is just a 1.8GHz dothan Toshiba laptop, with 1g ram.  It doesn't even raise a sweat.

So, from my perspective and experiences, make the leap.  The learning curve is small if
you're smart, and if you program with Delphi, you have to be smart to start off with,
don't we Smile

Just thought I'd pass this on as so many people had 'ordinary' experiences with BDS2006.
Your mileage may vary, but with Patch 2, I'm very happy.

Cheers,
Graham.

Graham,

Thanks for the heads-up...  just installed sp2 and
will look forward to improved performance.

and I didn't bring my installations disks with me to the summer home Frown

I guess it is a hobby since I have no income from my work...
I just donate my IT skills to a number of charities, although
I still put in the equivalent of a full week's work & then some.

The summer home is a tiny cabin on an island. The advantage of being a
retired Professor Emeritus approaching the big seven oh.

Try Google Earth
   44 54 10.63 n,  79 37 52.55 w
to see the island.  The resolution isn't the greatest up close so
you will have to back off a bit to see a better image.

Just be careful with the SP2 installation that you have all the
necessary resources in case it fails.

What's it like for adding / modifying components? I've just downloaded and installed V4.24b1 which means I have to alter a couple of my homebrew components. I had it down pat with D6, but D2006 seems to fight much harder and stronger. I ended up unregistering, deleting  the bpl's, altering in notepad and then re-compiling and installing. Along the way I found a component suite which I had not added to D2006 (it is in D6) had somehow got itself registered and was complaining that something (couldn't make sense of the error message) was wrong and I had to unregister it as well.

Its weird.

Roy,

On my desktop it seemed to work without an issue.
I didn't have to change anything.

On my notebook, it stopped D2006 working.  It's all there but something
prevents it from loading. I'm not looking forward to a complete
re-install.

It would probably have been alright if I hadn't had to alter my home brew components to use the latest DBISAM. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who has to modify components with a new version of DBISAM who's also using D2006.

ps How come you've got it on both desktop and notebook - did you buy two copies or does the licence allow that?

Roy,

Hmmm didn't check the license... I hope so. I've used Borland ever since
Turbo Pascal 1 (the license was always "use as a library book").  I just
assumed that was still the case... I guess I had better read and find out.

Interestingly enough, if I logon to the notebook as a different user I
can start up D2006 (without any of my customizations or libraries
tho' Frown) It also wants me to register again.

When I logon is as me, there's some minor activity and then it
terminates with no message. I don't think it even checks for the license
 files.
