I know you were joking. But I have looked at adding cancel support. But

I thought the RFC for the NNTP protocol had it, but I'd have to check.

As Tim says the RFC's have it - I've attached the two relevant ones I know of.

To me the problem isn't so much cancelling A message but what you do about replies to that message that originated between it being downloaded and the cancellation being downloaded, and also who really is allowed to cancel it.

Also what happens if any news client hasn't implemented cancel.
