Playing Around with Elevate Internet Server |

"Johnnie Norsworthy" | I downloaded the Internet Server posted by AJ Marknette, which I installed
and played with for awhile tonight. Anyone have a "getting started" guide? I created some newsgroups and posted a message, but I am most curious about how to set up a HTTP server and configure the data files and local disk structure. It makes me want to get a fixed IP! I could save some money on my web/email hosting. -Johnnie |

I was mostly using it for Pop3 testing of some of our software and added the nntp stuff as per Tim's request (I'd rather him working on ElevateDB then doing internet server stuff anyway ). http://www.elevatesoft.com/scripts/newsgrp.dll?action=openmsg&group=13&m sg=993&page=1 -- AJ Marknette |

Before deciding whether to invest in a fixed IP have a look at
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ It's a free DNS service that keeps a record of your varying IP address. Their database is instantly updatatable by client software running at your end (either on your PC or in your router - Netgear routers have the client built in). Makes it easy to run a server on a varying IP. --Bill Sparrow-- In article <CE10A862-C13E-45A4-BEB8-6D1C38C75602@news.elevatesoft.com>, jln206@verizon.net (Johnnie Norsworthy) wrote: > It makes me want to get a fixed IP! Makes it easy to run a server on a varying IP. I use GotDNS.org for this type of functionality for a couple of other things, but I did not know there was a client for one built into a router. That is cool. I might have to go shopping. -Johnnie |

Jim Margarit | I have an server hooked up to a linksys router hooked up to a cable
modem. The linksys router only updates dyndns when my ip changes which is only when the cable modem restarts. It doesn't have an option to force updates periodically. I have their client software installed on the server also with it set up force an update every 25 days. Still, every month or so I get an email saying that my address hasn't been updated in 35 days and it will be removed unless I manually update. Mildly annoying. Since the service is free, I put up with it.
