It coexists nicely with Delphi 7 and will give you a taste of what you can expect with the Pro version. As someone who is in the same boat as you, I'll give my 2 cents. I've been playing with it for the last week. It is a slick piece of coding and a big improvement over 2005 (which was a waste of hard earned money). The compiler is very fast and the code seems to be robust. However, I just can't justify the cost of the "purchase" (remember, you can't upgrade from Delphi 7 to Turbo Delphi). Most of the improvements in the IDE can be purchased for Delphi 7 from 3rd parties or are free. The refactoring and other enhancements can be purchased from TwoDesk software as Castalia. Load up GExperts and you have most of the rest. I you want the speed increases in your compiled code, then visit the Fastcode project (that's what Borland did). As an existing owner of Delphi, you'll have almost all the improvements at about 20% of the cost and it will still produce executables that will run on the latest version of Windows. Let's face it, the the best part of Delphi is the ability to add and update components and most companies are still producing their component packages for Delphi 7. The Jedi project produces a plethora of components, many of which take advantage of the latest Windows API's, so you can still produce programs that look just as modern from Delphi 7 as you can from Turbo Delphi. Now, if you're a new user, then you're a fool if you go with any other development environment. Even older version of Delphi are more productive than other environments. On the other hand, if Borland/Devco would see their way clear to offer an incentive for those of us with Delphi 7 to purchase Turbo Delphi, then I just might make the switch. Especially those of us who wasted our money on Delphi 2005. Right now, it just doesn't make economic sense to do so. Mark |

Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | As someone who's upgraded to D2006 - I've switched almost all the refactorings off - I spent to much time fighting them and couldn't be bothered trying to figure out how to alter them to MY coding style not DevCo's

"Malcolm" | In my case, having gone Turbo Pascal >> D2 >> D6, the
question is: Is D6 to Turbo Delphi a no-brainer? I have downloaded the Explorer (which I think can co-exist with D6) but have not yet pressed the button. Malcolm |

"Malcolm" | Hi Ian
Yes, I bit the bullet .. and they appear to co-exist fine. Trouble is that Explorer does not like *any* of my existing projects because of 3rd party components. DBIsam? Never heard of it! I will have to have a play with a new project to see if there is anything I can't do without. Malcolm |

Will you have to shoot me now? Off to golf then back to study/experiment. |
