Some time ago, I had an account at kylixhost.com. It was exactly what I
need: a simple DBISAM database of my own, just for testing. Very handy to
check if something is fast enough when the server is on the other side of
the globe. There was not much traffic, just some MB from time to time while
the tests were running.

kylixhost.com is no more. And it happens that I have to test such a
connection again. Does anybody now a hoster with an offer that fits my
needs? Sub problem: it's only for some weeks, so it should not be that
expensive.

How much traffic are we talking about ?  If it's not "bring the server to
its knees" type of traffic, then you're welcome to use our test server here
on our T1.   Send me an email if you're interested, and I can set up your
test data here.

I'm sorry about this -

My business partner's relative who owned the servers used to host the
websites, he passed away
and there was a dispute over the ownership of the servers. Since they
belonged to the (deceased),
his surviving family decided to take ownership, close the business and
eventually sold-off the servers owned.

It was unfortunate turn of events.

For this kind of testing I use a free DNS account. I configured a
domainname With the DNS provider that points back to my own machine. It
gives you the best of both worlds: you can test your application over
the net, and you have full control over your server (e.g. for debugging)

Would that help in your case?

No, unfortunately not. My router is intelligent enough to see that
rad-on.dyndns.org (which I use since some years, eg. for our svn server) is
right in my LAN - and tahes a shortcut. A Ping of less than 1 ms is the
result.

Right now I use an old machine of a friend of mine at his place. Not bad,
but also not realistic. It's giood for worst case testing, but you can't get
a feeling how the application behaves in standard situations (eg. with a
server on a T1 line), if you can send pictures without slowing everything
down etc.

I used kylixhost for about 4 weeks a year, and then only some hours per day.
Just for testing, no domain, no web site. It was inexpensive enough, but all
offers I can find today are more for real-world applications. They simply
cost too much.

I'll try to find a software the throttle the LAN interface of my server
here, just for one IP address (so the old address is fast as ever).

I did suggest sometime ago that the community could pay
for such a service from you but no the whingers wanted
u tied to coding the next version.
It aint as easy as people think to get a socket service its
ok if u have your own colo or dedicated server or even
a T1 like u have.

VMWare has the ability to mess with the reliability of the network between
a group of VMs IIRC, so maybe that would do the trick?

Well, we could always still do it.  It's certainly an option if there's
enough demand for it.

Cool I will go searching for the nearest server builder in your
neck of the woods.
In the meantime Ralf and guys fill this thread with server build
ideas.
Oh yes one idea I have is dont use the expensive Win bums
on seat use XP pro running SnugServer built with Delphi
unlimited and easy peasy to use.
Now we need something like them dll wrappers for starting
and stopping our own Dbisam/EDB server EXE's ?/??????
