Thread Simulating a WAN connection

Hi all,

wile looking for a test server, I also looked for a simulator. Something
easy: define the NIC or, better, IP address, of your server or virtual
machine, set throughput for up- and download and latency (with maybe 10
predefined setups for standard situations, like 33.6k modem, ISDN, 1mb DSL,
T1, T3), and start that thing.

The application that comes closest without setting up a Linux machine and
fiddling with config files is VE Desktop from Shunra. There is a trial
version available - with quite some limitations. You can't use all settings,
you can't load predefined settings, a test run will stop after 5 minutes
(after that you have full speed again), and the trial ends after 5 days.

But, hey! it works. The fact that you can't find price tags on the Shunra
web site made me curious, so I asked aunt google. Sooo everybody is sitting?
A full license of VE Desktop, the smallest VE version, costs the negligible
amount of US$ 2.999,00. That's about 100 monts worth of hosting with DBISAM
support.

Yes, I know, such a tool is a gem if you have to solve such problems every
day. But for maybe 20 hours a year?

They had a freeware tool available a loooong time back called Nimbus. It
disappeared one day, but luckily we've kept a copy on our server Smile

The support in the Elevate newsgroups is simply amazing WinkReally, thank
you very much for grabbing that tool and putting it on your server.

One problem: you can't set the latency. The application I am working on gets
a hit if latency goes up. Lower transfer speed is no problem, you can work
with it down to 14.4k. But 200 ms latency works like an air brake.
