I hate those days I can't read the Elevate newsgroups - I might miss some
tidbit of knowledge.

Ok take the situation as a tidbit, dont plant trees near powerlines
or better still run powerlines undeground.
Every year in the UK we have either water drought in the summer,
snow blocked roads or problems like Tim had, nothing changes.
The latest one for me this summer my Sky sat kept going down
at around 13:10 until 1500 I phoned sky  the lady said the cable from
my dish could be getting  hot. I hosed it nothing happened its no
longer summer if it starts next year I will get a new install with a
huge disc.

Well, just let me be the big baby and say that not having power, even for a
couple of days, *sucks*. Smiley

Most of downtown Buffalo has underground power lines, but as you get out
into the burbs like where we're at, it's a bunch of small towns and cities
with tree-lined streets and the power lines intertwined with them. Frown The
counts I saw on the news were between 350,000 and 390,000 homes without
power.  I'll see if I can get some pictures posted of the carnage - there
were trees and large portions of trees laying everywhere.  Very surreal.

We have so many power outages in cottage country
(north of Toronto) that I broke down and installed
a stand-by generator.  I usually have enough propane
on the island to run intermittently for 2 days.

I have to pump the water and the fridge doesn't work to well without
power and most important I've got to keep the hi-tech stuff up
and running!

These power outages make us all realize how dependent we all are on
electricity being always available!

Yep, been there... don't ever wanna go back.  We were without power and
phone (even cell service) for about a week after Katrina hit.  Luckily
our town had a guy with a generator and enough fuel to keep the water
going so we actually had running water. Most places around didn't even
have that. (no hot water, though we really didn't need it as hot was it
was.)

Here in Kendal, UK, we had a power cut for 3 hours on Saturday.
Fortunately we just stayed warm in bed and the power came on at 8:55 in
time to get up. I was glad it wasn't something I had to do. 8-)

I have to ask though, why not put the servers in a data centre which would
be less vulnerable to outages?

Then you should get a 3 phase power generator, or move to Germany SmileThe
longest power outage I remmeber was for about 2.5 hours.

I feel your pain Tim! I was without power for 3 weeks after Hurricane
Wilma in October 2005. That more than sucked.

Indeed.  It's been a freaky last 6 years here - we've had two major outages
that lasted more than a few hours.  However, prior to that there hadn't been
a major outage for over 20+ years.
