"Erik" | Hi,
one of my customers has a new computer with XP. he has trouble with starting up: power on : the XP startup screen comes ( the line on the lowerside of the screen which "walks" ) after that the xp log is seen but nothing happens (keyboard of mouse actions do nothing) he powers down the computer and again power on after repeating this about 5 times he gets the main screen and can go to work.. I think this is a hardware problem?? ( I am not able to go to that customer ) regards Erik |

Bill Edwards | Erik 1) If it's a new computer, he/she should take it back for warranty service. 2) Otherwise, it is possibly a corrupt boot sector or one or more corrupt boot files: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10877-6031733.html 3) Other software problems can sometimes be diagnosed by visiting My Computer|Properties|Hardware|Device Manager to check if any devices have problems -- such a device will be listed with a red "X". 4) If it's a hardware problem, it could be a) improperly installed or faulty cable(s), b) bad or improperly installed video card, c) bad, failing or inadequate power supply, d) leaking capacitor on motherboard, e) overclocked cpu, or cpu or its fan improperly installed, f) faulty hard drive ... it is always a good practice to check the cables first. 5) Another possibility is incorrect bios setting(s). In any case, it would be wise to take the machine to a technician; otherwise, they risk making the situation worse (or, unfixable). |
