Thread 64-bit

Tim,

Can I ask you to consider 64-bit compilation in your plans please? I write
a data processing app, and I think that I will need to do a 64-bit version
in the next year or two. Now, I reckon the UI can stay as-is, reading the
results and setting up the analysis, but I will need to be able to write a
64-bit app to be able to read the data from the database, crunch it, then
write all the results.

Now, it seems that CodeGear are not doing 64-bit anytime soon, but the FPC
compiler allows it today. It would be brilliant if ElevateDB was
compilable (and usable!) with FPC 64 bit. I would like to hear your
thoughts, and those of others considering 64-bit, on the feasibility and
desirability of this. Thanks!

We are strongly considering targeting the FPC platforms, and based upon what
I've seen, it should be a fairly straightforward port.

Thanks - I look forward to the news release. 8-)

FWIW, I note that RemObjects supports FPC now. This means that a Win64 app
can sensibly talk to a Win32 app to communicate. With shared database
access too, it looks promising.

If you can say that with a large library like yours to maintain I think FPC
deserves a closer look by me. Thanks.

I'm fairly impressed with Lazarus and FPC at first glance.  I'll know more
when I get into the nitty-gritty of the port.  However, it's really our only
option for Linux given the Kylix situation.

I've never taken it seriously since I saw the IDE and a very sluggish app
written with FPC, but your post makes me very curious. This was ages ago and
maybe it has evolved. You think it's up to snuff for serious development
now?

Mind you...I'm still on D5. <hangs head in shame>

Well, it certainly looks good at first glance, but again, I haven't actually
put it through its paces yet. Smiley We have had a lot of inquiries about FPC
lately, however.   We really need to come up with an alternative to Kylix,
so FPC is our great hope for such a conversion.  We also will be porting the
EDB ODBC Driver to UnixODBC, so FPC will be important for that also.

D5 is/was a great version of Delphi, and most of the DBISAM development was
done on D3 and D5.  All of the DBISAM utilities and servers are still
compiled with D5.
