Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | I always thought the registry was MS's biggest fup but
I wondered why my (Vista) c drive was looking rather bloated and discovered winsxs. In my case it was c9 Gb. Following a few instructions on the net I got rid of the sp2 stuff so I'm only left with a c6 Gb winsxs directory. What sort of size have the Windows7 adopters amongst you got? Roy Lambert |

Charalampos Michael | Dear Roy,
> Ouch. About the same then. Don't forget that it's the 64-bit so it contains also the 32-bit libraries ... -- Charalampos Michael - [Creation Power] - http://www.creationpower.gr |

OK so its a bit better, I still think its a bloody imposition grabbing that much of my disk space without providing ANY tools to remove the crap. Roy Lambert |

"Raul" | Win7 Pro 32bit also approx 4GB
However if this blog is to be believed then actual usage is way lower and number we're seeing is simlpy explorer showing hard links as actual consumed space : http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2008/11/19/disk-space.aspx Raul "Roy Lambert" <roy.lambert@skynet.co.uk> wrote in message news:3C4CCDFA-A063-4E3A-BAAF-B87D8C3828E2@news.elevatesoft.com... >I always thought the registry was MS's biggest fup but > > I wondered why my (Vista) c drive was looking rather bloated and > discovered winsxs. "Raul" | Now i got curious...
According to this utility (http://msftmvp.com/ntfsutil.aspx) my winsxs folder that explorer sees as 4GB contains 3GB or hard-linked files and 1GB of actual files. So actual usage from file system perspective should be "only" 1GB. Also this just doesn't stack up. If I delete an app it doesn't actually get rid of the stuff winsxs has accumulated MS mention something to do with the OS scavenging the space back from unused stuff but none of the threads I've read so far has seen any evidence of it. If its just a link, hard or soft, how can it still be there when the bloody file has been deleted? I know I can do nothing I just wish MS would get a few designers/developers who live in the real world not their ivory tower. Roy Lambert |

I tried it but on Vista I just get [Window Title] C:\Zap\SizeSxs.exe [Content] C:\Zap\SizeSxs.exe is not a valid Win32 application. [OK] Roy Lambert |
