Thread Utilities for Vista - recommendations please

Since buying my new Dell with Vista I think I'm going to need to buy a few utilities since my XP ones don't work, and the Vista ones where they exist are "sub-optimal":

Registry cleaner
defragger
file finder / search (without indexing)

Any recommendations - free would be a major benefit Smiley

Roy,

I have been using Diskeeper for years now and it works flawlessly.
Windows Vista is supported (note that Diskeeper Home does not support
Vista Business or Vista Enterprise.) Diskeeper Professional does
support all Vista versions. The cost for Diskeeper Professional is
$49.95 USD. I like the fact that it works in the background (as a
service) and automatically defrags when needed. I haven't lifted a
finger in years to defrag and I am always defragged.

I don't have Windows Vista yet (I'll go kicking and screaming the
entire way!) so I can't offer much info on the other utilities you
need. I did find this site http://100-downloads.com/more.php?c=4 which
might be of some assistance.

It looks good. Do you know if it will defrag my DataTank networked drive (its running Linux)?

Yeah - I made a big mistake when I didn't click the XP button and pay an extra £30 for it.

Thanks.

Roy,

Defragger - i'm quite happy with the one built into Vista as it does a lot
better job than XP did and auto-scheduling works well. In the past i've
found JKDefrag (free, http://www.kessels.com/jkdefrag/) to be more than
adequate - and you can set it up as a screensaver so it defrags whenever
screensaver kicks in.  I've also tried commerically Diskeeper, Vopt and
PerfectDisk and while they had more options they did not seem to do much
better job in my opinion (e.g. no perfromance difference from free tools).
And i personally don't like these tools running as services - why consume
system resources if all i really need is a scheduled run every now and then
(daily, weekly, monthly depending on your usage of the system).

Registry cleaner - while i don't have any personal experience some of my
friends use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) and it seem to like it

File Finder : I'm using a file manager called FreeCommander
(http://www.freecommander.com/) and it has a very nice quick search built-in
(and app is written in Delphi apparently). If you ever used and liked Norton
Commander then this a very good and free windows clone.

Just my $0.02

I'm not sure. I'm not much of a hardware geek but from Diskeeper's web
site:

Hardware support:
Diskeeper runs on the IntelR x86 platforms (including compatible CPUs
from other manufacturers).

Functional Limits:
Maximum supported volume size: 768GB
Note: high-powered desktop systems with volume sizes up to 2TB will
need Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier.

Disk subsystems supported:
Primary Partitions
Extended Partitions
Logical Drives
Volume Sets
RAID Arrays (hardware and software)
Mirrored Disks
Mounted Volumes (letter-less drives)

Thanks for those - I especially like the defragger. Someone who doesn't have a massive install program and doesn't use the registry - a man after my own heart.

You're welcome.

Freecommander also comes as a a zip but it's more hidden - just follow the
"U3, portable and zip" at the bottom of download page. You can then just
unzip the file and run the exe - no setup needed.

No but you probably don't need it.

Diskeeper only works on Windows to best of my knowledge and even then only
with Windows file systems (ntfs, fat) - this is true of other windows based
defraggers i think.

In general defrag utilities can only deal with local drives where they have
direct access to low level APIs - so for example you can't defrag a remote
shared windows drive not to mention linux one (since you're using one of the
sharing protocols lik SMB/CIFS/NFS/etc).

Thats the bad news.

Good news is that generally defragging is not needed on Linux.

Not to say that it never gets fragmented but the file system generally
handles file storage better and impact is generally negligible (unless it's
like 95%+ full but even in windows defrag tools usually need 10-20% free
space).

It looks like your Data Tank uses ext3 filesystem so wikipedia has some
notes on that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext3#Defragmentation).

If you ever do run into slow performance problems then just move all data
from the DataTank share to your PC and then move it back to DataTank - it'll
basically force the filesystem to defrag all the files since they're coming
in proper order.

I prefer PerfectDisk 2008.

For searching I use 'Windows Search.'
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/default.ms
px  but it uses indexing.
