Will it be possible to store the metadata for temporary tables in the catalog? The sort where they are created in memory as and when needed rather than stored on disk, and where there may be several tables created with that structure eg where there are multiple threads.

Sure, all table information is stored in the catalog for the database,
including the "Memory" database, which has its own catalog just like any
other database.

Not initially.  However, the capability is internally in there, so it's
something we can enable when we have the initial release tamed.
