Strange "permanent" lock on a table |

Adam | I have a strange one.
I have a table on a customers computer, running DBISAM 4.24, D6 app. Everything about the app works just fine. When the user tries to copy the Server DB files onto a backup hard disk (just using Windows Explorer, nothing fancy) Windows refuses to copy 1 of the DAT/IDX files, with the error message "Windows cannot copy, please check that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use" 1. The disk is not write protected or full. 2. ALL apps are disconnected from the server computer & it has been shut down completely, then restarted ... so there are definitely no phantom sessions hanging around. ... the problem has persisted for a long period (weeks!) though users are able to access the problem table in the application & make changes to it. -- This must be a weird Windows specific issue ... does anyone know anything about it? Adam (PS no posts telling me to switch to Linux please ... (I would love to, but my customers ... |

Have you tried to find out what is locking it, or used one of the file unlockers on it? Roy Lambert |

Bill Edwards | You might try the following:
1) copy the data folder from the server to a local computer. 2) rename the data folder (on the server). 3) create a new data folder (on the server). 4) copy the data from the local computer to the new folder (on the server). At some later time, once the old renamed folder is finally released by the evil forces, it can be deleted. Something probably has a hold on the folder on the server, such as: 1) virus scanner (either running on the server or real-time scanning from one or more remotes). 2) backup software that has its own locking system. 3) possibly a Novell network. |

Tim Young [Elevate Software] Elevate Software, Inc. timyoung@elevatesoft.com | Adam,
<< "Windows cannot copy, please check that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use" >> That sounds like a *destination* issue, not a source file issue. If it's a source file/sharing issue, the error is usually something to the effect of "cannot access file" or "access denied". -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

Would love to use one of these, if I knew what they were or where to get them from ... any link? Thanks for all feedback, it has been really useful. Adam |

Bill Edwards | Perhaps you can copy the files from a command prompt, using xcopy ...
