Not a Dbisam problem as such.

I have a dBase file that contains every street on mainland UK.
Using the Dbsys util I can import it to Dbisam ok and even
export to a text file ok.

Now the problem I have edited the text file on many occasions
after the transfer in notepad and although its not lightning fast
its always been quick to do.

Below is what the text file looks like...........
1st field Recno that dBase contains
2nd & 3rd fields contain the X Y coordinates
and the 4th field contains the street name, town name, and county name,
as I want the last field to be 3 fields I do a find and replace in the text
editor 26 times with the alphabet and comma as u see below there is
a comma between street, town. county so its easy to add the following.

Find  A, (space here)
Replace with A","(nospace here)
and so on.

Eventually I get to the Z in the alphabet and the record 56 below would read
as
56,58016,225662,"AACHEN WAY"," HALIFAX","WEST YORKSHIRE"

I have done this many times on this 680,850 records and as I said earlier it
worked fine but now it just hangs. So what has gone wrong with my PC that
I could check ?  Its also like that on my laptop 2gb ram XP plus my Opteron
running 64 bit SuSE and my Win2003 all these machines are on my home
network and now if its not a hardware fault what is it ?
Then Dbsys is doing its job fine by sending the data to a text file and this
is
whats making me freakin mad. Help pretty please. I need speed. or a typing
pool of 600,000 + to edit one text file in this day and age.

What about loading in Word and using a macro then saving as text? Or load in the Delphi IDE and do the changes.

Load into word
So a search on " change to null (blank)
do s replace of commas to tab ^t
Import back into dbsys using the ASCII Delintger "9" (TAB)
TABS are default in post spreadsheets.

I have the same fault with word and also wordpad and
Lotus I have as yet not tried the Delphi IDE so I will
try that next then dig out the year but lasts PC with
all my changes on it.
Problem I think is either some malware hogging editors
on my system as it never happened last year when I
entered new streets.

Thanks Allan the Delphi IDE stopped working also ?
2gb ram phewwwwwwww
I think I shall take a drive upto Cambridge this week
and see if the mainframe can cope with my little file.

Records = 682,847
Text file size = 41,510,329 Bytes

The puzzling part is the same file was edited easy before.
I shall take a look at Ultraedit thanks.
