Just curious as to what kind of support you are seeking for an older
version of Dbisam, and no source code?

No builds since August 2004.
That would have done it for me.

Then buy the source code. That is the only help you will get.

Considering that v 4.XX is the current version of Dbisam, I would not
expect any new builds of 3.XX, would you?

Well, I don't know for sure...

What I meant is that after checking the customer download area and seeing no builds since
2004, I would have probably gotten the message. I wouldn't have liked it, but
unfortunately, most software "goes stale".  The question is how long is it reasonable to
expect support?  Software seems to be moving toward a subscription basis, which basically
translates to "no current version no support".

Normally, before getting a new copy of Delphi, one "counts the costs". This includes other
upgrades, especially if you only have dcu's.  The original poster's tone seemed especially
odd when considering *really old* DBISAM (free support), *brand new* Delphi (not cheap).
(Ok, maybe it was his first or a gift copy of Delphi.)

Anyway, you could say that EDB 1.0x is the current version, so 3.30 is 2 version ago.

Dan,

Version 3.x was frozen several years ago, and we are not issuing any new
updates to it.  If you purchase or upgrade to the latest 4.x with source
code, you will gain access to the older 3.x versions with source code also.

It did not go stale.  It got a new version.

I still see plenty of support from Tim on the forum, but expecting new
builds for new IDE's for a past version is pretty unreasonable.

I suppose one could, and Dbisam 4 could be the last major version
upgrade for Dbisam. I have not seen that announced yet, but it would
not be a shocker to me to find that were true.

Same thing. Like all software, things moved on. That version can no longer be used with
the current Delphi, so 3.3 is "stale." In this case a new version was produced. I'm not
implying poor support, or lack of development. In fact, I wasn't even trying to
specifically aim at DBISAM or Elevate.

>I still see plenty of support from Tim on the forum, >

My comments were not aimed at Elevate, although, rereading them, it is understandable that
they might be interpreted so. They were meant to be general.  I just got done looking at
some other 3rd party tools. In response to the difficulties of supporting previous
versions, things do seem to be headed toward subscription. In the case of DBISAM, the help
provided for previous versions, so far does not seem to have an expiration. This is "going
the extra mile" and very good customer relations.

>but expecting new builds for new IDE's for a past version is pretty unreasonable.

It generally is going a little too far to "expect", ("demand", "feel 100 percent entitled
to"), a new build; however, depending on circumstances, it might not be unreasonable to
"expect" (as in "hope", or "having a sense of being treated more than fairly") to receive
the build. Delphi has always had the DCU version issue. There could be no changes to
source and still old DCUs are unusable. It seems to me it depends on the amount of work
involved. If it were just a build, then it would be good customer relations. That doesn't
mean a customer can expect a zero cost build, but the question is: "Does this justify a
full upgrade cost?"

After my original post I started to think of possible changes to Delphi. I think, for
example, there might have been TDataSet changes since 3.3 (never used it, so it's not
clear), so yes, expecting a free build, which would be an "upgrade" would be a little too
much in that case. Also, practically speaking, the price of sourceless DBISAM is pretty
low already, so you can only push the idea of "free" so long.

It was mentioned at one time by Tim that the plan was that 4 would be the last (not the
exact words) in the DBISAM series. Not sure where that stands now.
