FYI we have begun experiencing the exact same thing over the past few months using C/S v4.16

I'd be very intersted in finding out why.  AV software on client machines is different between affected machines and the files are not ending up in the
recycle bin.

I'm wondering if it may be an anti-spyware thing (probably Microsofts)?

It shouldn't be - we've used MS Windows Defender here and it seems to work
just fine with DBISAM tables.
