Eduardo,

If the process is C/S, then you should definitely consider using cached
updates or a scenario whereby you save the updated rows to a stream, send
them to a server procedure on the database server, and then have the entire
transaction run on the database server.  That should be very fast (just a
few msecs), and will alleviate the problem completely.
