Thread File Locking DBISAM
Fri, Jan 23 2009 9:22 AMPermanent Link

Allan Brocklehurst
Hello;

I using:
dbsys : Version 4.27 (4.27 Build 1)
dbtran : Version 4.27

problem: It seems that  files are remaining locked after I download files.

What I do is to grab data from a SQLServer DB using DBtran. A file named "dbo.Vendor" is save as "dbo". I then go to dbsys and rename"dbo"  to
"VENDOR", or whatever file I am current working on.
Now, This process worked great in that I could rename the file successfully having both Dbsys and DBtran open  until, it seems, the V4.27 came
out.
Currently  I have to rename the file on the OS level (more efficient than  closing DBtran and DBsys, the re-open DBsys)

Please Advise

You're missing something here.  DBISAM (and DBSYS) use the OS for renaming
files, so the result is the same as if you typed rename at the command-line
or did so in the Windows Explorer.  What error message are you seeing when
the rename doesn't work ?

Tim;

when trying tot rename in DBsys I get Error : Access denied to table or backup file   'dbo.' 11013
so I then close out dbsys and  rename the file in Windows Explorer.
and open dbsys again. dbTran remains Open

BTW will you have a similar DBtran  tool for ElevateDB?

Are you running any anti-virus software ?

Do you mean DBSYS ?  If so, then yes, there is an interactive ElevateDB
Manager utility like the DBSYS utility.

Just to develop on a bit from Tim's answer.

There is no DBTran in ElevateDB, instead Tim has developed a number of migrator modules (one of which is BDE) and its possible to use these in ElevateDB so if you like DBSys and DBTran have been merged.

Even better its a doddle to call a migrator module from within a Delphi program so with a little bit of work you can probably automate the whole process.

The one difference DBISAM and ElevateDB in this respect is that DBISAM is file orientated and ElevateDB is database orientated so it may need a slightly different approach.

Geez, thanks for that. Smiley I couldn't figure out what Allan was talking
about with DBTran, thinking that he was using some 3rd party utility.  Now
that you mention the above, I realize that he's talking about the BDETran
utility. Smiley

Reading some of the specs you've posted here that you have to understand I'm not surprised that you've lost contact with plain English/American Smiley

Well, as I've said before here, I'm pretty sure that I forget the name of
our cat every time I read a new email or newsgroup message. Smiley
