DBISAM 3 or 4 |

"Bobby Gallagher" | Hi
We have a number of programs that currently use DBISAM 3. We are using Elevate DB for new projects but feel that the conversion of our existing programs will take a long time to complete - we do intend to convert these to Elevate DB at some time. Question - Should we convert the DBisAM 3 programs to V4 for now - if so what would be the advantage. These programs are in use with our customers Regards Bobby -- Bobby Gallagher Moore DFM Limited Zion Court Zion Road Rathgar Dublin 6 ph: +353 1 492 6623 mobile: + 353 86 908 3191 |

These programs are in use with our customers There isn't a "correct" or easy answer to your question... The amount of work involved in a conversion depends on many factors, like if you use SQL or not and if you do what kind of SQL statements and how often do you use DBISAM specific SQL syntax, if you use semaphores or not, how do you create/alter the database objects, etc.. Only you, knowing the applications, can correctly evaluate the work involved. You can find the complete list of changes between versions here: DBISAM 3 to 4: http://www.elevatesoft.com/manual?action=mantopic&id=dbisam4&product=d&version=7&category=0&topic=111 http://www.elevatesoft.com/manual?action=mantopic&id=dbisam4&product=d&version=7&category=0&topic=2 DBISAM to EDB: http://www.elevatesoft.com/manual?action=mancat&id=edb2&product=d&version=7&category=2 That said, in my opinion if you are really planing on using only EDB in the future, there is no point in converting first to DBISAM 4 and then again to EDB. On the other hand, a conversion to DBISAM 4 can make sense if you intend to stay with DBISAM for that applications - and that is a perfectly valid option since DBISAM 4 continues to be a supported product, with regular bug fixing releases and even new features sometimes. So, I think that the real question now is: do you want to use only EDB in the future or not? -- Fernando Dias [Team Elevate] |

I'll go along with Fernando. From a purely pragmatic viewpoint if its working, giving neither yourself or your customers problems, and you intend to migrate to ElevateDB at some point why waste time, money and effort. Roy Lambert |

"Iztok Lajovic" | Hi,
from my point of view it depends mainly how much are you using SQL in your applications and, very important, are you using any of CreateTable and AlterTable functions in your code. If you use them then you must be prepared to rewrite all these functions to SQL. If you are using scripts with multiple SQL senteces in one script, you have to do some rewriting but not so much. On the other side, there are some points to reconsider using SQL in version 4 too. I would recommend you to make a minor pilot project at first in ElevateDB and see what you have to change to reach the same results as you have with version 3. ElevateDB is flagship now and it is worthwhile to test it first. "Iztok Lajovic" | Rita,
I am sorry for using words that might be wrong but I was told by an Englishman that the word 'flagship' is used as another term for 'leading product' too. Sorry, english is not my mother tongue so I have to consult people who know english better than me and I supposed that poeple, born and educated in England know the meaning of not so frequent terms. And I found quite time ago using this term in elevatesoft newsgroup too. But beside the joke, was there some thorn of critic hidden also? I just mean that old 3.x version seem to beat those new flag ships in benchamrk tests. I especially hate to see NexusDB to beat all these "our" database versions in speed. Stan |

We had to go and ask Goobbels again http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/dog's%20bollocks.html An outlander would interpreted this so that you do not like those 3/4 versions quite as much as you love for instance kidney pie. > I just love either 3or4. And here again, you have deeply fallen in love on both of those laborous, geschmuddel fellows. > Sorry if I offended anyone no animals were harmed in the typing of this post Your dog also, all it's artillery is untouched too? All right then, this thread may start to be finished. If anyone has any comments about those benchmark results between DBIsam/Elevate versus Nexus, that part would be interesting though. Stan |
