Thread Upgrade from 4.25 5 to latest release
Sat, Feb 1 2014 7:23 AMPermanent Link

David

Hi all.

I have a few databases that are all running on 4.25 and everything has been working fine more or less for the past few years.  I have noticed the odd problem with the server sometimes becoming unresponsive to all connections, including the admin module and also getting an error when users do not log of properly or their app crashed leaving disconnected sessions on the server.  when the server releases these I would see internal error releasing session in the server logs.  Other than that more or less everything works fine.  I do have the odd issue with speed that either requires a new index that I have missed or a server restart to fix.

I am looking now to upgrade everything to the latest release due to a migration to Windows 7 from XP and I would just like to clarify a couple of points.

1. I know about the blob issue with 4.28 or less. I am using client server and my intention is to upgrade all user applications to use the latest release, however I just want to clarify, is this all I need to do to upgrade?  Also, am I correct in thinking that technically because of client/server that all I need to do really is upgrade the server and I wont have any issues?

2. Are there any changes that I need to look into when upgrading that might change the way my apps currently work.

3. Is there any noticeable difference in speed in the latest release, I am hoping so as that always pleases the end user.

Many thanks for any advice.

As long as the DBISAM Database Server is the only process reading/writing to
the database tables, then you only, at a minimum need to update the DBISAM
Database Server.  However, there have been several client (remote session)
bugs that have also been fixed and they can affect the DBISAM Database
Server operation, so I would recommend to upgrade all client applications
also.

See above.

In the release notes (included with the installations and on the Downloads
pages), all such changes (since 4.30) are marked with "Breaking Changes".

Yes, there are some performance enhancements that will increase the
read/write performance from that seen with 4.25.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thanks Tim.

I intend to upgrade all applications anyway so should not be a problem. I just wanted to make sure I had understood everything correctly.

My subscription has just expired so I will have to renew it to get the most recent release but delighted to see there has been a few bug fixes for the disconnected sessions and the possible speed increase as well SmileIt will be $99 dollars well spent.

Many thanks Tim.
Regards
David.

Yes, all of the bugs with disconnected sessions have finally been resolved.
We had some issues with them earlier on in 4.29, and then again with the
introduction of the 64-bit architecture, which required re-writing all of
the session and object handle code in the server.

Tim

That is excellent news and will be worth doing the upgrade just for that.

Just out of idle curiosity, when sessions were not closing down  properly and finally released by the session expiry or through the admin module, were all resources be released or did this cause issues.  I used to find the longer I left the server running it would just get slower and slower so periodically I would schedule a restart of the server to avoid the issue.

Yes, it would cause a degeneration of the server functionality.  In some
cases, the end result would be not being able to log in to the server at
all.

Hmmm that would certainly concur with what I have seen in the past where sometimes users were not able to log on to the server, even via the admin module,  so this upgrade to latest release should hopefully put paid to those issues and save me having to restart the server regularly to avoid them.
