Thread ElevateSoft release time

Mauro Botta

Hi

I am writing this email to make a reflection about the timing of the releases of ElevateSoft

I am a very happy customer of dbisam and EDB, for many years, this is not a complaint but just a friendly discussion , about how the Delphi world has changed lately.

I use many Delphi components ( DevExpress , ReportBuilder , TMS , EDB ... ) ,  when Embarcadero released  Delphi XE3, within a month ( TMS days... , other week )  all the partner above, released (even with minor releases ) their component including the support to the new compiler ,

In the last years, ElevateSoft has been the last that release their updated components.

Every time we had to wait , wait  , wait  the migration to the new IDE for the lack of updated components for DBISAM / EDB .

We do not update the IDE for hobby, we are developing using Delphi Mobile / DataSnap applications ... and having the last version of Delphi IDE is mandatory.

Now ....

Embarcadero has increased their update cycle, reducing it to 6 months and today, with XE6, we find ourself in the same situation of always, Everyonel except Elevate have released any update.

We ask Tim to reconsider its allocation of priority , to come closer to its clients , I asked often Tim , the Beta of EDB , ( enough that compiling ), but the response has always been negative .

I understand that other products asking for his attention, but I would like to ask that the upgrade to the new compilers will be managed with greater importance and with lesser waiting .

i would like to remember that the difficulties of the migration from XE5 to XE6 are almost nothing.

Best Regards

You raise an interesting issue. In the past, I used to get the new Delphi installed,
and then just ignore it for a few months because of the delays from component
vendors. By having it installed immediately, any installs I did for an update would
also get into the new version, and after a while I'd start using it, and update
other components. Sometimes it was sensible to wait anyway as some critical issue
in Delphi would need a hotfix before it was sensible for production. And I'd never
switch compiler just after a product release to prevent breaking things. For Tim,
he has his tasks that we all want him to do - fix issues, add features - and
Embacardero's schedule is out of his control. It may be that it is hard to stop
everything and upgrade when things may be "broken" at the moment in a product due
to changes being made. Tough call. I hope that Tim has early access to the new
versions, but do we want him to take time to make things work, then more time on
any fixes that may be needed in the beta?

I don't know the solution, other than working out how to give Elevate Software more
money to employ more people. I'll be interested to hear other people's take on
this.

Why wait? Recompiling the XE5 DBISAM and EDB packages for XE6 is completely trivial. So trivial I frankly can't even remember doing it - but it was within 5 minutes of installing XE6 itself.

The only VERY slight bump in the road I can think of is when using other products which create their own EDB drivers (I'm looking at you RO DataAbstract) who haven't caught up with the fact that the TEDBString and TEDBStrings types have been retired. Trivial to fix though:

type
 TEDBString = string;
 TEDBStrings = TStrings

I agree that sometimes a Delphi version revision is significant enough to make it worth waiting for an official release, but XE6 is such a minor upgrade from XE5 (at least on the Delphi side) that there really isn't any point.

And here we are again with the usual problems.

XE7 is available from 17 days from Elevate no information about the timing or anything.

I changed my license DBISAM, from STD to STD with sources, but not all the sources are released (I guess for problems to manage their license)

I can not spend $ 719 for the version C / S Full Src, (I do not need dbisam-server) just to be able to recompile dbisam because of their slowness, no beta support, no info....

Mauro,

Of all the 3rd party component developers you mentioned in your May
12th post, only TMS has a XE7 upgrade available. With XE7 only being
out 15 days as of today, even the larger component developers (Digital
Metaphors and Developer Express to name a few you mentioned) do not
have an XE7 upgrade available.

I think you are being a little hard on Tim in this regard. Most 3rd
party developers don't even have the chance to even begin the upgrade
until the Embarcadero release goes out, and they get it like the rest
of us do. I got my notice on September 2nd (15 days ago).

I'm not trying to be too critical as I don't know your situation, but
lets assume Embarcadero didn't release XE7 until next month. Would your
business be hurt by continuing to use XE6, as you are currently doing?
Just saying...
