Hi Tim.

I saw a post from you a while back saying you were planning to put in Unicode support to Dbisam.

This would be an absolutely fantastic update and I am very much looking forward to it.

I was just wondering if you have any idea when this might be? I know you have other priorities first but would be good to hear if you can update us on this.

Thanks
David.

It's something that I will be looking into in the first part of 2019.  For DBISAM, the rest of 2018 is going to be dedicated to getting 10.3 support out, stripping out the UI from the DBISAM Database Server, and seeing if I can get DBISAM ported to other POSIX architectures like MacOS and Linux.

Well with any luck it will take a long time to arrive. One of the main reasons I use DBISAM is because it does not support Unicode. If it's given Unicode support, I won't have a reason to stick with it any longer.

Hi Tim.

Well sounds like you are going to be a busy man for a wee while but thanks for the update, I think a lot of Dbisam users will welcome the ability to use Unicode as it allows to internationalise their apps.

I look forward to this when I can get round to it.

Thanks
David.

Interesting - I don't use unicode but I'm still very happy to use ElevateDB. Personally, I would think there are a lot of good reasons other than lack of unicode to use DBISAM (or its big brother ElevateDB).

Out of interest are there still databases out there that don't support unicode?

I have licenses and use: DBISAM, EDB and EWB.

Just my ramblings - but it seems to me - that EDB already has Unicode - so if someone needs Unicode - move to that DB.  Not that I care one way or the other if DBISAM gets Unicode - it is just that you are split three ways and if you were split two ways that would allow those two products to move forward quicker... If you could focus on just one product I would ask for EWB!  End of ramble.

But you know your market, and support demands, better than me.  And quite possible you have a larger base of DBISAM users who are needing UNICODE and Mac/Linux..... and that will generate more revenue.

I was slow to move to EDB and have not migrated older projects out there... but now having the choice of starting projects with either of these DB's allows me to meet simple and complex needs of customers. I love them both, but EWB finally pushed me into the wild world of the web and I kinda enjoy delivery in a Browser since it is OS agnostic.

Tim as always I appreciate your hard work and dedication - I trust you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will have a Blessed Christmas.

I know where you are coming from but this is not trivial considering
significant differences between products.

Our main product is still DBISAM based and rock solid (thanks to Tim but
also years of working out bugs). We have looked at migrating and for us
does not make sense - though we would like unicode capability (we have
gotten around some of that in some limited cases by using utf8 but that
is not really scalable in our case)

I wish that were possible (just from the reduced work), but alas, our product revenue is split pretty evenly now between all 3 products, so no such luck...

Yeah, it certainly is nice being able to target your audience in a generic way.  It's very much like the days of only needing to target Windows - nice and easy. Smile
