Thread ElevateDB Vs DBISam 4
Sun, Aug 19 2007 9:01 PMPermanent Link

"Gregory Sebastian"
I currently use DBISam V3.3 and I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer
product to be used with Delphi 2007 for Win32. My question is, should I even
be considering DBISam V4? Is ElevateDB meant to replace DBISam or are they
both separate/ different product lines with their own upgrade paths ? For
example, will there also be a DBISam V5 or V6 etc at some stage in the
future?

My reading of Tim's posts on the matter are that DBISAM will be supported / developed for the next 1 - 2 years but will then be phased out. My advice would be don't go through the pain of upgrading from V3 to V4 and then the pain of upgrading from V4 to ElevateDB. You might as well get it over with and it won't hurt so much Smiley

We've already purchased DBISAM 4 but are still using 3.30.

I'm trying to convince our lead developer to change, but I don't think he is too keen.

I don't think I've much chance of convincing him to spend $729.00, even though it is
roughly half price here in the UK.

Cheers, Stu

We keep thinking "Yeah !!!" every time we see the dollar drop a little, and
then we realize that the price of gas and groceries just went up another
3-5% and wiped out any gains. Wink

They are both separate products, but ElevateDB is definitely the future
direction.  DBISAM will be supported for some time still, but minor version
releases (not builds) will probably cease by the beginning of next year.
This does not include new compiler releases, however.   We will continue to
support DBISAM and offer new builds/compiler releases for as long as
possible.

Hi Stuart,

Any reason why you did not jump straight to ElevateDB but decided to
purchase DBISam 4 first ?

Tim,
Is ElevateDB able to open DBISam V3.3 databases or am I able to
programmatically upgrade a DBISam V3.3 Db such that it can be opened in
ElevateDB ? Basically, my newer apps (using ElevateDB) need to be able to
open and upgrade earlier DBIsam V3.3 databases. Or do you have any
documentation that I can refer to for porting DBISam V3.3 to ElevateDB ?

Thanks
Gregory Sebastian

ElevateDB comes with a suite of convertors covering BDE and DBISAM 1 - 4. Check out the support docs on Elevate's website and there is a migration guide.

Hi Gregory,

We originally purchased the DBISAM 4 upgrade shortly after it was first released, so
Elevate DB was not available yet Surprised

To be fair, the main developer should have developed the program using DBISAM 4.
We already had it before he started the current product, about a year ago, so I think it
was just laziness on his part.

Thanks Roy,
I downloaded the trial version of ElevateDB and found detailed documentation
on this there. As usual, I should have checked first before posting, sorry.
