Thread x64 ODBC Driver for DBISAM v4 ?
Wed, Oct 28 2009 1:27 PMPermanent Link

Sam Jones
(I apologize for posting this, but I cannot find earlier threads on this subject.)

The question: What is the status / schedule of an x64 ODBC driver for DBISAM v4.x ?

The reason I ask is that we have users who link to our database as a linked ODBC
datasource from within SQL Server.

On x64 SQL Server, they are currently down and out (in fact, we have two production sites
who are DOWN due to this issue).

Any advice or pointers welcome!

Thank you!

Rafael,

We cannot produce one until Embarcadero/CodeGear release a 64-bit compiler
for Delphi.  I'm looking into using the Lazarus/FreePascal 64-bit compiler
as a stop-gap measure, but there are no definite plans or dates on this
right now.

What do you mean by "down" ?  Did they not look into this before switching
to the 64-bit version of SQL Server ?

No, they did not. This is a user of our system who has installed and used our system at
many sites. They weren't thinking things through (or, perhaps, did not know the customer
ran SQL on x64).

So after setting up customer #1 just fine, and #2 just fine, they told #3 "We can set this
up for you tomorrow" but they can't set it up at all....

If I can help fund the investigation into the alternate compiler, please let me know.

You can have SQL server x86 and x64 installed together ...
Just make sure that they have different instances.
(eg, add a suffix to the x86 instance like: MSSQLSERVERx86)

I know. But that does not help a site that is already fully running SQL x64 and trying to
integrate to us...

There is no usable workaround to this issue. We need an x64 ODBC driver....

It's not really a matter of funding, but rather time.  It just takes time to
do this type of conversion, and we don't even have the base DBISAM engine
ready for 64-bit yet.

Tim,

More and more sites are moving to Windows7 x64.

I have a lot of folks begging me for an x64 ODBC driver.

Let me know how I can help!

1) You can still use the 32-bit ODBC driver on x64, but the host application
has to be 32-bit also.

2)  We cannot produce a 64-bit ODBC driver until CodeGear/Embarcardero comes
out with a 64-bit compiler.  We're investigating possibly using FreePascal
for this, but only if CG doesn't produce something by later this year.

Well, you can use FPC for a start until Codegear decides to release a
x64 compiler.
