Thread EDB as Service

Food for thought, Tim.

With Vista/Server 2008 being very "bitchy" about services, I would maybe
think about somehow splitting the server app into two piece.  One would be
the server itself and the other would be a control app for the server.

The problem is that if you install as a service on Vista, you can not get
GUI access to the service.  So it doesn't show in the system tray.

The "great powers from Redmond" have created the edict that this is not a
good thing.

I had to work around this by not using the EDB server as a service and
putting it into the registry for the local machine.   They can see the GUI,
but unfortunately can close the server too.

Yeah, I forgot about this.  I'll see if I can fit something in for 2.0.

Thanks,

Don't thank me....  thank "Uncle Bill" and the boys.... lol.   Next time I
drive by Bill's house across the lake here, I'll drop by and give him your
"regards"... or in this case... the one finger salute.

I wasn't happy about it either.  Especially after spending several hours
tweaking my installers and trying all kinds of things until I got the "can't
get there from here" information from M$.

This ended up comming up in the delphi newsgroups too...

==================================
It is best to separate the system tray logic into a separate non-service
application that runs in the context of the user's account after they are
logged in, and which communicates with the service via any IPC technology
you are comfortable with (named pipes, TCP, etc).
