Minor Annoyance with URL |

"Johnnie Norsworthy" | Is there a reason why "ElevateSoft.com" is not in a DNS to pull up the web
site and instead requires "www.elevatesoft.com"? Every time I visit the site I leave off the www and have to retype it. Obviously not a big problem. Don't delay ElevateDB or anything like that. -Johnnie |

Just imagine how many keypresses you will save a few people! It kinds of puts all this award-winning database stuff in perspective. -Johnnie |

Heck, I brought that subject up over a year ago We discussed that and several other related issues in a few messages, starting with: ==================================================================== Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005 14:57:04 -0500 Message-ID: <xn0e8wzoqbr7u7000@news.elevatesoft.com> Heh... Been using that facility for years... Didn't think it would be much news to the type of users that frequents these haunts almost didn't post it. I'm glad it helped. Hmmm... I'm really surprised that you're surprised: I don't think that Google would be able to distinguish your "republished" web copies of the newsgroup content from "regular" pages. (I do realize that it's more accurately described as a full-function "multiple-mode-access" newsgroup database.) And I suspected that one major reason you created the web face for the newsgroups was to engage the Googling search facility before they handled newsgroups... By the way, while I've got your ear: you might want to get Choice One to put in an alias for your domain name so that it would be reachable without the specific www host prefix. (Entering ElevateSoft.com as an address would take you to the same place as www.ElevateSoft.com...) ==================================================================== I see that conditions are pretty much the same: (BTW, I'm pretty sure that the "From:" HTTP header is a *request* header, not a response header.) A GET to http://dbisam.com returns: HTTP/1.1 404 Error Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2006 16:58:48 GMT From: system@elevatesoft.com Server: ESWS/DBISAM Content-Length: 54 Content type is NOT text. Create code to show it PROGRAMMER! (* Hmmm... You write live-code messages to PROGRAMMER too... *) --- or: Error Code: 404 Error Message: Resource / not found ------------------------------------------------------------- A GET to http://elevatesoft.com/ results in "Host not found." =========================== When you're altering or having the DNS altered, you might want to consider one of my later suggestions from that thread: "Another possibility that might be even better would be to establish wild card records that forward any unknown (or mistyped) hosts to the main host! (Someone that enters wwww.elevatesoft.com still gets to the right place...)" ====================================================== And while we're on the subject(s) I'd like to suggest that you consider adding gzip and deflate compression to the web server's responses. IIRC, you're operating on a T1, which means even if the line is swamped, your processors are probably just loafing along (?). Even a "dumb" application of just on-the-fly compression of appropriate outgoing responses (no precompression, or other optimizations) should probably yield a quadrupling to quintupling of the HTTP traffic capacity, with no great load to the processor(s). ?? It might be worth considering. Especially if you have to pay for bandwidth, what with all the EDB traffic starting up now! |

"John Seward" | Tim,
I realize that, and quite frankly, you're doing much better "wearing multiple hats" than I am. (Product development has nearly obliterated all the rest of my life.) BUT, this is one job that isn't really yours (?). It belongs (!) to Choice One OnLine. They're running your DNS for you, and should be the ones to change it (I believe). Your DNS records are misconfigured, so they really ought to fix it. Hmmm... Let's see... Yup, this shows up nicely on the following report http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=elevatesoft.com The very last entry refers to this problem, but the report does list other items of varying severity. If they're responsible for it, I'd be inclined to send Choice One an email regarding the problem(s), requesting that it be fixed, and I might include a link to that report. IF Choice One provides you with some sort of control panel for hosting services, these reports should aid you with the repairs. Chances are, it ought to be pretty easy to add the required A record with their control panel. There are some issues with the email DNS records that would warrant changes too. There are some smaller issues with the dbisam.com domain that they could really fix too: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=dbisam.com - - - I totally understand needing to stick to the priorities, I just thought that these systemic items were valuable enough to do in the small time I estimated they'd require; and I'd hoped the info I supplied would help. The records haven't been changed since 17 Aug 2002, and several items could actually REDUCE your work. Examples: answering questions on why ElevateSoft.com doesn't work <g,d, & running....>; but a more important example would be adding an SPF record, which could drop any spam bounces from your automated and manual email processing. Which GAINS you (and US) more product development time! ... OK, I'm checking out now .. |

It just hasn't been high on the list. I'll see what I can do, however. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

Wow, ElevateSoft.com (no www.) works! I didn't even notice that you got it done on the same day as the message this responds to. Cool. And thanks. |
