Thread Acc 401 Error after Windows XP Update

I have 3 end users now that after they have a Windows XP Update and their computer is turned back on the configuration path for the EDBSRVR.exe has been changed to my program files folder, but it was originally set to just a default database directory.  Any ideas as to why it would be changing after a Windows XP Update and how I fix it so they don't have this problem after an update?

Looks like something happened with the edbsrvr.ini file - the original
was moved/deleted or not accessible so EDB server created a new default
one.

This also means you might be missing some other settings if you
customized the server settings stored in ini.

I think on XP the INi is under all users (C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Elevate Software\ElevateDB Server) so i would
check that folder and ini creation stamps.

There is no reason for the XP Update to do this nor have i ever heard of
any XP Update losing ini or other user files so i would suspect
something else causing it - either AntiVirus or maybe the customer is
something else special during updates or maybe they use folder
redirection or such and something got reset, etc.

Thanks Raul, I will check into it with my end users and see what I can determine based on the information/suggestions.

I have several customers who experience this same issue consistently once every couple of months when a windows update runs. Do you have any suggestions how we can prevent this?

You need to track down exactly what happens - this is not something that has really ever come up in these forums so it's something to do with your specific setup.

I've never heard of windows updates interfering with the 3rd party INI files so i suspect the problem is something else - for example the reboot itself or how the updates get applied and how the application/INI is setup.

You'd need to provide some more info for us to have any useful feedback :

- are the users running local copy of the edbserver on their machine
- or does the issue happen on the server system where edbserver runs ?
- how is the edbserver setup and configured:
-- what  folder is it in ?
-- is it configured as a service or is run by users interactively

Just going through this thread, my investigative brain says to look for
things like the UAC Virtualization. The server, when run with the right
user account, will see some files where they really are. But if run as
the ordinary user, may see those "same files" in the virtualized
location instead. This is the sort of thing that might happen on a big
update and reboot, as the one that was running fine is now running
differently, but it doesn't appear so.

Anyway, just a suggestion. The only other thing that I've had like this
was a duff RAID mirror that would go back in time on a reboot, but the
whole system update would disappear too, along with all data changes.
That was fun.

That would definitely be a possibility with Win 7 but likely not with XP
(that Alex says has experienced same issue).

Things like roaming profiles etc might play a role if used.

Not enough data at this time.
