Thread ElevateDB Open Source ?
Sun, Dec 22 2024 4:37 AMPermanent Link

Hello,
Wouldn't be nice to open-source ElevateDB with somekind of payed support subscription or something similar ?

It's been years without any new feature of this great product so we can contribute to it while Tim doesn't loose any income.

Thank you

I don't really believe that there is money in opensource, at least not as a general rule but as a few exceptions, and I don't think Elevatesoft belongs to those exceptions.

You can already buy the source code, you can start contributing right now if you wish to do so. And if you create something nice that might be of interest to others without breaking anything, maybe Tim will simply add it if you donate it.

I agree with the points you made. I'd also add that most open source stuff I've encountered is either not supported/developed or if it is its one or two people only involved. The other thing is the level and complexity of the software. I for one am happy to use ElevateDB but would run quickly from trying to develop it.

Way back before Indy was part of Delphi I remember spending a couple of days finding a small but important problem to do with email (its the reason I now use Synapse) and reporting it back to the developers. I'd switched to Synapse before it was fixed.

Well i don't think Tim would easily add any 3rd party code.

(eg, ZStandard native compression or Key Value indexes)

I'm still waiting for EDB3 and a single file database.  At the rate it's going I'll be dead before it's done. Frown

I'm also waiting for some new things in edb but nothing happened in
nearly 2 years. We are paying subscription ... no news, roadmap etc
from Tim. Hope, he is fine!

I don't understand why Tim doesn't just post something, anything, on the forums. If he is going through something personal then tell us (details not needed).  If he is working on something then let us know.

The wall of silence is deafening.

Facts, that's why i proposed to open-source EDB. If Tim can't handle it for whatever personal reason we could do something about it. It's pretty good product to let it die in the dust.

Another solution is to sell it to another company.

I doubt EDB would go open source for reasons others mention. But those who have made code improvements certainly can email those to Tim in hopes he adds those or makes the changes in a way that makes sense for him.

Eons ago, I thought Tim mentioned that should something happen, that things were in place for the product to go to Elvind at NexusDB.  While a different approach, there's similarity within the principles.  And Elvind has continued to maintain their product.   I maintain a subscription there for playing around, but I still continue to leverage either EDB or leverage SQLite when needing a single file solution.
