TD Advanced Data Systems, Inc. | I hate to ask but is there any news regarding the release of EWB 2?
I can hardly wait to get my hands on it! TD |

Steve Gill | My uninformed and uneducated guess would be no earlier than June/July. To me, there looks like there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Of course, I could be totally wrong.

I'm sure Tim is hoping earlier than that, and what is there is pretty darned solid. The changes so far have been in response to our feedback, but I think you could "ship today" if you wanted to - it's just that there are some changes coming that make it not such a good idea to do so. I reckon it could ship this month. One thing that I've always been impressed with in Elevate Software's products is that they are quite thorough and detailed, and have considered most of what you might want to do. None of this "minimum viable product" to get it out of the door and hope people don't fall down the holes. Version 1 is great as it is, version 2 will be much better still. |

The preview looks and works great and seems to be feature complete enough for initial v2. However some of the components are still being worked on and once finished should allow v2 to be released. Tim Young [Elevate Software] Elevate Software, Inc. timyoung@elevatesoft.com | TD,
<< I hate to ask but is there any news regarding the release of EWB 2? I can hardly wait to get my hands on it! >> Right now I'm trying to finish up the final controls and features like touch support, and I hope to have that all done by mid-March. Once I get it to the point where it's complete, but without documentation, we're going to do pre-orders for those that just want to start working with the product. Just curious, what do you think is left to be done that would account for 3+ more months of work ? Maybe I'm missing something really important.... Steve Gill | Hi Tim,
<< Wow ! Just curious, what do you think is left to be done that would account for 3+ more months of work ? Maybe I'm missing something really important.... >> I'm not meaning to be critical but, as most of us know, things often take a lot longer than expected when it comes to coding. You have previously mentioned times where you have lost weeks on some issues you have had to resolve. Also, to quote the incomplete features: "The TCalendarControl, TDateComboBox, TGrid, TPaint, TSlideshow, TAudio, TVideo, and TSpitter controls are not done yet." I don't believe some of the components would be trivial to develop, especially the TGrid. Maybe I'm wrong. You're the expert, after all. I know that there are those who believe EWB2 is virtually complete but, for me, without things like a TGrid EWB2 is of no use to me. Almost every page in the apps I produce, for myself and clients, use a grid of some sort. And I don't fancy building my own grid. I would rather spend my time creating apps that make me money. Documentation can also take a long time to write, not to mention that it is tedious and brain numbing to do. In my defence, I'm talking about a fully completed, fully documented product, not a beta version. If you can get it all done in about a week and a half from now then that will be absolutely fantastic! Again, I'm not trying to be critical, just realistic. Please understand that I'm not attacking you. And I'm not trying to start a fight or a flame war. I highly value your work and have always had only the utmost respect for you. EWB1 and 2 are both amazing products and, I believe, there is nothing else out there that comes even close. That's why I keep buying your stuff. = Steve |

<< I'm not meaning to be critical but, as most of us know, things often take a lot longer than expected when it comes to coding. You have previously mentioned times where you have lost weeks on some issues you have had to resolve. >> Sure, but those were all *foundational* problems, and they are notoriously hard to deal with. As far as foundational issues left to go, touch support is the last, and it's half-done so it's not quite a foundational problem anymore. << Also, to quote the incomplete features: "The TCalendarControl, TDateComboBox, TGrid, TPaint, TSlideshow, TAudio, TVideo, and TSpitter controls are not done yet." I don't believe some of the components would be trivial to develop, especially the TGrid. Maybe I'm wrong. You're the expert, after all. >> They're not trivial if they introduce a need for something that the UI currently doesn't do. For example, writing the TListBox was tough because it was the first virtual list control that I've done for EWB, and it needed virtual scrollbars, etc. The TGrid is a TListBox with columns and headers. The others are ports, or twists on existing controls. << I know that there are those who believe EWB2 is virtually complete but, for me, without things like a TGrid EWB2 is of no use to me. This is EWB 2.x, so most of the documentation will stay put. << In my defence, I'm talking about a fully completed, fully documented product, not a beta version. If you can get it all done in about a week and a half from now then that will be absolutely fantastic! >> Hey now, don't move the goalposts. I said mid-March for a pre-order version that *doesn't* include documentation. << Again, I'm not trying to be critical, just realistic. Please understand that I'm not attacking you. EWB1 and 2 are both amazing products and, I believe, there is nothing else out there that comes even close. That's why I keep buying your stuff. >> No problem. History tells me that you're right, but one of these times, history is going to be wrong.... Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |
