Not supporting the placeholder attribute hardly makes things "lowest common denominator".   And, considering that the IDE uses IE for its browser, it's pretty hard to make the case for having properties that don't do what they imply they do *when run in the actual IDE*.  Which leads me right back to what I said: more support requests/questions.
