Just got email saying that NNTP access is being withdrawn. Very sad news
for me as I keep up on my iPhone and on my PC using NNTP. The "unread"
messages are a key benefit of NNTP. If there was an OAUTH compatible API as
an alternative access so that I could have a similar UI and the benefits of
NNTP I'd be happy but I suspect it just means I won't be responding to
questions so much instead.

Not many left doing NNTP which is a shame because its so much better than web based. I'll go a bit further than you - I'll just stop bothering. NNTP is almost perfect for a Q&A format. The "more advanced HTML features" I've seen on others generally mean tat rather than anything useful.

I do prefer NNTP so sad to see it go.

I don't know all the details but in the past Tim has mentioned that
keeping the NNTP meant that he was limited on how much he could change
the HTTP side of things (without having to maintain 2 separate back-end
code bases).

I do hope there will be an update to the web interface soon - for me
threading is the main pain point. Or maybe even just adopting an
existing web forum or support style product - like SO or such.

First thing each morning, I go to Thunderbird, click on the Elevate newsgroups and press "N".  This brings up the first unread post and all have to do is keep pressing "N" to scroll through the lot.  Anything of particular interest I read in detail.   Learn lots of interesting stuff this way and incorporated techniques into my programs - even help someone else at times.

How will I do this now?  Had a devil of a job finding Matthew's post in the web interface - had to go back to Thunderbird and find out in which of the 20 odd ng's that I read he had posted in.

Yes it is since NNTP is so more efficent to check news compared to these web based clients. And
maybe I'm getting old, but I don't need fancy HTML formatting. The same is true for email for me.

I don't use EWB so I'd alter that to "more time for his products". Howver, my bet would be that a web based forum, especially, with "more advanced HTML features" will take more maintenance than the NNTP version. Obviously, dropping NNTP reduces the maintenance load to zero.

Indeed. I also can't understand how this affects PCI compliance. The
open port can be explained - I've heard of others having other servers.
Perhaps the real solution to that is also to move card servers away
from customer servers.

All of which is irrelevant, but I do hope that some sort of per-user
system is available. Perhaps a Slack forum - or is that not suitable?
We need somewhere to hang out with a "next unread" facility. What makes
WebBuilder and ElevateDB is access to the other users and the ability
to ask questions. I only answer things because it is just there and
telling me there are new messages. A web based forum will just be
people asking questions, and the occasional answer if someone happens
by weeks later. If this was part of a grand plan to give us a new
system, I'd be happy.
