Would one be able to install the new ElevateDB PHP Extension for Linux using a hosting company like Hostgator for example?

Yes.  The only problem that you may encounter is that they are running
64-bit versions of Linux, which is not supported by ElevateDB yet.
HostMonster has this problem, for example.  But, you may be able to request
a 32-bit Linux host, so I would check with them on whether they offer them.

I'm working on 64-bit Linux support next week, though, and should have
something available with the next EWB release (1.03).  The coding is easy -
it's the build/testing environment/cross compiler that is a pain to get
working.
