Can a dataset be filtered?

E.g.: I would like to load the complete detail data for different master
records, but display only the matching details when scrolling through
the master records.
Is that possible?

Not client-side, no.  You have to use a detail dataset that uses query on
the back-end to just grab the rows that match the current master row.
