Thread EWB3 and SSL Cert on external REMOTE server ?
Mon, Jul 26 2021 1:04 PMPermanent Link

Hi

Hope everyone is well.

Is there anybody who has setup EWB3 to run with SSL on an external REMOTE Windows Server ?

I guess I would need to purchase a SSL certificate from somewhere and then install it into the windows server
local machine account.

If so are there any recomendations that work well with EWB3 for cert providers etc and how to go about it ?

I had a look at lets encrypt but not sure if that would be able to work just yet with EWB3 ?

cheers

I was able to install the Lets Encrypt free cert on my remote windows server and have EWB 3 up and running.  I am using a remote windows server through godaddy - not sure if that made a difference.

Yes - pretty much all of those will work, including Let's Encrypt and
any other Web Server SSL cert.

Let's encrypt is free but need to renew more often (though one can
automate renewal) while you can get a SSL cert for 1 year for about $20
commercially.

Thanks Guys

It all loooks a bit complicated...nice to know that Lets encrypt will work with EWB3 apps.

I looked into Lets Encrypt a bit further.. so it mainly refers to IIS installations...for securing web domain names.

But in the case of EWB .. I guess its a cert for the ip address in question installed in the "Local Machine" account of the remote server.

Are there any steps / guidelines / links on how to do this for EWB3 using Lets Encrypt ?

On remote server to secure something like:
https://123.456.789.1/projects/app1
https://123.456.789.1/projects/app2 etc.

So the SSL would need to cover the above scenario.

Cheers

EWB3 uses certs in the windows cert store so this is very generic to
windows in general.

Yes but you cannot request a CA signed cert for IP - has to be for a
domain you own. This has nothing to do with EWB - this is cert requirement.

Pretty much any LE guide will work as long as cert ends up in the proper
windows cert store.

For example win-acme is an easy to get started with
(https://www.win-acme.com/) and has manual and notes.

As i said you cannot get a cert for IP - any CA issued cert needs to be
for a domain you own.

If you have an IP - you can get a domain name using DYNU.COM

Then you can get a cert with this name.
