Just a quick link to show the latest example project coming with 1.03,
running on our (soon to be) new web server with much better bandwidth.  It
features the new TSlideShow control in  1.03 that allows for easy slide
shows with animated transitions.  The transition (fade) and display options
(random movement, zooming) are somewhat basic still, but look good.  It also
features the TAudio control that allows for HTML5 audio support for playing
media files.   There's also a TVideo control in 1.03.

(requires a decent broadband connection)

Let me know what you think.  I'll be doing some more with this example in
terms of better progress updating, either by using a TServerRequest or
something similar.  This example uses a TDataSet for the table of
images/blob data, and I may expand the loading options for BLOBs to include
returning the response as a base64-encoded string, which will make it easy
to use as a data URL with a TImage, TSlideshow, TBackground, etc.

Thanks,

Nice,  but....

I am not sure if such features are more important than a perfect grid e.g.

Sorry to say that.

The thing that drives me to EWB - is that I can build applications with the knowledge I already have.... Grid improvements/enhancements are very high on my list too.

I understand the need for things like TSlideShow (maybe I'll build a real estate app...).

But between the two - I would take new Grid features over a TSlideShow.

Grid:
- read only columns Highlighted to show selection even when focus is somewhere else (this is important usability issue) (ie Master - Detail Grids)
- record/row indicator
- color cells
....

Look at DevExpress... they excelled brecause their Grid is the best VCL Grid and opened all the doors.

Effort poured into the Grid will pay dividends.. (look at ExtJS).

The show stopper is the EWB Dataset/Database knowledge/frame work for building Web Apps.  Everyone who uses(d) Delphi - should be using EWB - it is RAD.

I will suggest that this is not the best case for the EWB product "today".
Sure, a better grid would be nice, but you can make one yourself (yes,
ouch, but I use panels and get lots of lovely grid customisation as a
result). The slideshow is something I would find harder to do from the
building blocks provided.

The question is: who needs a slideshow and who needs a grid with all the
possibilities of a  a html table e.g.?

I guess the majority of the users is writing kind of business
applications...

Sure you can workaround a lot by using panels, but that 's nothing but a
workaround. BTW: it's no problem to create a beautiful slideshow using
JS, JQuery etc.

I would like to have the basic features first, then everything else.
Though I appreciate very much Tim's work creating such wonderful features.

Uli,

I've stated this before, but it may have been missed:  I can't do anything
else with the grids and other controls in terms of customization, etc. until
EWB 2.x.  The themes/styles. are going to be completely different, as is the
entire design-time environment, so everything is going to work differently
in terms of drawing, elements used, etc.  I'm not in a position to spend a
lot of time writing something that will need to be subsequently changed in a
significant way in the very near future.  One thing you'll notice about
these new controls is that they don't use any themed elements at all.
That's not a coincidence.

The TAudio and TVideo controls are part of efforts to help round out the
HTML5 support, which is asked about by potential customers *a lot*, and the
TSlideShow is a control that is used quite often by those using EWB for web
sites, as opposed to straight-up web applications.

Remember, everyone has different needs/wants, and we hear all of them. Smile

Late to the party, but for what it's worth, I think that the inclusion of HTML5 functionality is absolutely key to EWB's future success. However, I also understand the need for better grid functionality. To me, it's a balancing act and the HTML5 stuff has been overdue a little in recent months. I think of this more as a levelling exercise pre-EWB2. As an aside, I have this morning already shown the demo to an existing customer, who immediately asked how much to incorporate in their solution. Interesting times indeed.
