Progress Update on Elevate Web Builder 2.07

I just wanted to take some time to update everyone on the (now) very-late 2.07 update to Elevate Web Builder and solicit some comments on potential areas of improvement in the IDE. I also figured that I would do this in a proper blog post, primarily because I don't blog enough about what's going on here at Elevate Software and this is an effort to change that.
To recap, Elevate Web Builder 2.07 will be quite a big update for a minor release. In fact, it's essentialy a major release crammed into a minor release. The list of improvements include:

The IDE has been given a facelift and looks quite a bit different in several ways. Part of this is due to the need of starting the process of making the IDE high-DPI aware, and the other part is the need to improve the look and feel of the IDE, especially in terms of negative space and ease-of-use. The new IDE tries very hard to make sure that what one needs is only a single click or keystroke away, whether it be recent projects or saving debug messages to a text file.

I'm happy to finally be able to share this really cool EWB 2 application with you. The application is called Cinedisk, and the author is Uli Becker. He originally developed the application using EWB 1, and it looked great even with a lot of the limitations that came with EWB 1 in terms of layout/design. However, the EWB 2 version is so cool that I asked him if we could host it directly on our web server.

Effective April 1, 2014, we will be changing our policy regarding subscription renewals. If you have purchased the latest major version of a product and your subscription has been expired for more than two years (which would be three years from the original date of purchase or your last subscription renewal) you will not be able to simply renew your subscription in order to access the latest version of the applicable product. You will be required to purchase a new license at an upgrade price equal to 50% of the list price. This is being done to maintain fairness to those who always keep their subscriptions current. They are effectively subsidizing customers that let years pass between renewals.

Also effective April 1, 2014, the price for DBISAM subscriptions will be increased from $59.00 to $99.00 for Standard and Standard with Source Code versions, and from $99 to $159 for Client-Server and Client-Server with Source Code versions. This is being done to reflect the increased cost of DBISAM development in newer environments, and to encourage people to migrate to ElevateDB.

This release was originally scheduled as a new build (2.06 Build 3) but, due to a change to the call-level API of the ElevateDB Server in order to fix a bug, it was necessary to increment the release number instead. You can find out more information about this bug here:

The latest scheduled release date was December 15th, but unfortunately we're going to miss the release date again. At this point, I'm not going to be posting any more scheduled release dates until the product is completed. In general, circumstances have not been very cooperative this fall, especially with our internal systems. We've had to cope with a server hard drive crash (again), having to put in a new replacement server, a router failure, a power supply failure on our order processing server, and had to re-work our entire build systems for the Delphi XE2 releases. All of this has killed at least a month and a half of work that was supposed to be used finishing up Elevate Web Builder and moving on from there.

Please check in here periodically to see any updates on the product release, and thank you for your patience.

Both DBISAM and ElevateDB will initially include support for 64-bit compilation only, with Mac compilation coming at a later time.

Due to the ever-increasing number of releases required for each new Delphi version (Unicode, ANSI, 32-bit, 64-bit, x86, ARM, PHP, .NET, ODBC, VCL, LCL), we are currently having to make modifications to our internal build systems to acccomodate new naming schemes for all new builds and releases, in addition to updating the source code base for 64-bit, and that is what is responsible for the delay.

Elevate Web Builder (Updated)

As some of you may have noticed, we have a big banner on the home page of the web site that links to some preliminary information on our upcoming product Elevate Web Builder. I thought that I would take a moment to discuss the producct a little bit, and explain a little of the rationale behind it.

If you've noticed that things are a bit quiet around here lately, this new product is why. I started development on Elevate Web Builder in spring 2011, with the intention of doing ElevateDB 3 development in parallel with the new product. Of course, what happened was that ElevateDB 3 development started to take a back seat due to the extreme development demands of the new product. Apparently, writing an IDE and compiler is pretty hard work. It was probably for the best, though, since this new product has allowed me to take a break from database engine development for a while, and that breathing room has provided me with some great new ideas for ElevateDB 3. ElevateDB 3 is still about 75% done, and development will resume in earnest around November after the initial Elevate Web Builder product launch.

The Elevate Web Builder product is actually a very good complement to ElevateDB. The general idea will be that the ElevateDB 3 Server will be getting an additional web interface that will allow it to serve up data to an application written using Elevate Web Builder. This will allow the developer to completely separate the core database functionality from the application logic in the web interface and presentational layer in the web application. You will be able to complete an entire application development process using only our products, which will save large amounts of money on support and integration costs. Of course, you will also be free to use any web server or application server of your choosing with Elevate Web Builder. Any web application built with the product can communicate to any HTTP server.

Don't Let This Happen To You...

Since we're in the database engine software business, I'm always interested in what type of software is used in various local businesses that I patronize. More specifically, I'm always interested in seeing what various ISVs are using for their database engine for distributed Windows desktop applications.

Haircut Day
Recently, I was due for a haircut so I headed over the hair salon for a cut. In case you're wondering, I've tried barber shops in the past, but frankly, they just don't stack up to a proper hair salon unless you want a "high and tight" (ask a US Marine, if you don't know). At any rate, after I was finished and was settling up at the counter, I asked the owner the name of the software she was using to manage the salon. She was happy to share lots of information with me and, armed with that information, I headed home to do some research on this particular software. It was particularly interesting to me because the software took quite a while to load (> 45 seconds) when she was showing it to me. She blamed this on the computer being old, but I knew that her computer would have to be something from around 2000 or earlier to be that slow, and that certainly was not the case.

Exploring...
Once I got home, I quickly Googled the name of the software, found a trial version, and started downloading the setup executable. The first thing that I noticed was the size of the download, which was a whopping 86MB. Granted, this isn't a showstopper issue, but it made me start to wonder exactly what was in the setup executable. Once the download completed, I started up the install directly from the setup executable. The executable was digitally-signed: so far, so good. Part-way through the installation, the installation stopped with a prompt indicating that it was going to start installing SQL Server 2005 Express. Ahhh, there's around 36MB of the installation size right there (the rest were .NET assemblies, but that's a different blog post ). I clicked the OK button to continue on with the installation of SQL Server 2005 Express, and halfway through the process the installation failed. Uh-oh....

As is the case with many endeavors, I intended to do a post like this every Friday, and as is also the case with many endeavors, I didn't exactly follow through. It seems like some weeks I simply don't feel like I have anything new to add to the conversation. But, it's been a long time since I've done a Casual Friday post here, so I have built up a reserve stock of items to discuss, and can now unleash them upon the world.

First, Some Business
A new ElevateDB 2.05 minor release will be coming out early next week with a few bug fixes for 2.04 B4 and earlier. The reason for the minor release increment is due to a bug fix in the call-level interface to the ElevateDB Server where modified flags for defaulted columns are not being streamed properly from the ElevateDB Server to the client, and this is causing issues with both replication and indexing. The ElevateDB Server requires a new minor release number for any changes to the call-level interface, so the release number increment is a necessity due to this design feature and will not contain any new features. More details will be available with the 2.05 release.

ElevateDB 2.04 is finally complete and released, so we can all take a break here at Elevate Software. Well, not exactly. Now that ElevateDB 2.04 is out, there are still quite a few features that need to be addressed as part of the inline builds for 2.04. To keep everyone up-to-date on what is on tap for 2.04, the ElevateDB roadmap has been updated. One of the first items that will be addressed in an upcoming build is nested transaction support. This is crucial for making transaction usage in triggers and procedures/functions much easier to handle, as well as allowing for cascading updates/deletes for foreign key constraints. In addition, we are working on a native PHP driver, and hope to have that available soon. We may even do a special promotion, so watch your inbox for a notification.
Finally, some words of caution regarding 2.04:

Breaking Changes Addendum

There is an addendum to the 2.04 breaking changes for the SQL/PSM FETCH, INSERT, and UPDATE statements. The original breaking change is described as follows:

You must now use string expressions for column references in the SQL/PSM cursor FETCH, INSERT, and UPDATE statements. Existing routines (functions, procedures, triggers, jobs) in existing configurations and database catalogs will still function properly using the old syntax, but will require the new syntax as soon as they are altered. Routines that are created with 2.04 or higher, and non-persistent routines such as scripts, will require the new syntax.

As ElevateDB installations continue to grow in size, and with the build times taking longer, I finally had a chance this week to modify our build system and how it interacts with the downloads on the web site. In the past, downloads for ElevateDB and DBISAM would be suspended while the products were built. Now that ElevateDB is taking hours to build for every new build or minor release, this design was no longer feasible and amounted to way too much down time during which no one could download the product. This has now been corrected so that the builds can be done using a newer minor release number/build number while the downloads continue using the most recent minor release number/build number.
As indicated in the build 16 announcement, the builds are coming a little more often lately as we begin to tighten up things before the upcoming ElevateDB 2.04 release. This type of work will continue to take place as the ElevateDB product line matures, but hopefully with less side-effects.
In addition, build 17 includes an updated Lazarus distribution targeted for Lazarus 9.28/Free Pascal 2.2.4.
Last Friday was part of Easter weekend, so I skipped the Casual Friday post. The post this week is a little late due to my having to spend last Thursday and Friday switching my development environment from my old Windows XP Pentium D box to a new Dell XPS 9000. I've been putting off the switch to a new machine for at least a year now, dreading what I would encounter when trying to switch everything from XP to Windows 7. Fortunately, things went fairly smoothly and the most time-consuming portion of the switch was simply transferring the 200+GB of data and programs from the XP machine. The big problem I have now is that all of the ElevateDB and DBISAM performance tests are twice as fast, and so I need to re-adjust my point of reference as to what constitutes "fast".
I have been working on some new performance improvements to the ElevateDB ALTER TABLE statement over the last couple of weeks, and they will be available as part of the 2.03 Build 10 release. These improvements are especially significant for very large tables (greater than 1 million rows) and should make database schema upgrades much less painful in terms of down time. 2.03 Build 10 should be available sometime this week.

We spent a long time researching options that would integrate easily with Delphi, provide great flexibility and features, be priced reasonably and provide quality assistance when needed.
