Thread Can I connect to a ElevateDB server from Linux?
Sun, Jun 21 2009 8:48 AMPermanent Link

Edward Jones
I have an ElevateDB server running on an XP Home machine and naturally the other XP
clients can happily connect to it. I also have some Linux boxes (Fedora 10 and Ubuntu) and
would like to see if I can get them to connect to the ElevateDB server aswell.

Is this possible and if so how?

This is best addressed by Tim.

however, i think the answer is probably not.

There is no native Linux version of ElevateDB (e.g. Kylix) as far as i can
tell and also all dev environments are Win32
(http://www.elevatesoft.com/prodinfo?action=view&product=edb&no=2).

The possible options to look into (but no idea if any would work):
- Lazarus in theory can be compiled on/for Linux
- ODBC or ODBC thru something like Mono

Not currently, no.  It will be once we get the Lazarus/FP version of
ElevateDB ported to Linux.

OK, thanks for letting me know. Connecting from a Linux (or even to a Linux) box is just a nice-have not a must-have for me at the moment but
it is good to know that it is there somewhere on the roadmap!

Yes, Lazarus on the latest OpenSUSE 11.1 with KDE is pretty nice, and
certainly comparable to using it with Windows once you get over a slight
learning curve.

Good point - app or even EDB server might run with this now "as is".

I wonder if anyone has tested it?

We haven't tested it, so I can't really say.  But, we stick pretty close to
the standard Win32 API calls and don't call anything really esoteric, so it
should work.

Alright - i had to try it out and seems to start fine.

See post "EDB on Linux (CentOS)" in binaries for a screenshot.
