<<Especially since XE5 came out about 3 months after I purchased XE4. I
purchased XE4 because EMBT scared me into thinking they would not let anyone
upgrade to the next release unless you had XE. It's all in the past but that
did really get me upset.>>

I've heard that story quite a bit.  But almost every year, especially near
the end of the calendar year, they will have a "special limited-time offer"
for everyone to upgrade from any prior version.

<<Not sure I can handle being welded to the M$ universe. Also, I have seen a
lot of "about turns" with Visual Studio, i.e. they develop a technology, do
a crazy sell to get everyone to take it on,  then more-or-less drop it. That
would kill me. I don't have the energy to dump masses of work in the bin
over & over.>>

I bought Kylix when I thought Borland had really embraced Linux. Then there
was the .NET version of Delphi that turned out to be fraught with bugs that
was abandoned. And what about Delphi XE2? Wasn't that the first version with
cross-platform capability where people started writing iOS apps and then had
to throw that code away because XE3 was so radically different their apps
couldn't be upgraded (perhaps it was XE3->XE4)?   I really thought
FireMonkey was going to be another technology that just lasted a few
versions and then withered--sort of like BlackfishSQL.

I guess my point is that nearly every product has major changes at some
point, or add-ons that later get discarded. With Delphi, the VCL is pretty
much gold as far as stable and has been around a long time and probably will
be now that Windows 10 looks like it'll be keeping the desktop.  But with
the VCL, you're limited to just Windows desktop apps.

Everyone's gotta choose what's right for them--there's no one clear answer
for everyone.

Good point. Out of all the things that Delphi has done, VCL has been the
only real rock solid performer. I guess that's why I'm pretty reluctant
to try anything else at this stage. Smile

That normally has the opposite approach to me...

When companies do that, I find I tend to hold off until the price of a
new purchase is less than what it would have cost me to have paid for
upgrades to that point.

I don't mind paying where I see value. Compare Elevatesoft with EMB. I'm
still paying for DBISam - even though there isn't many changes, and I'm
happy because the product is brilliant, and I still get support.

I'd be happy to support EMB too if they patched their versions until the
bugs are free from them even if there is a new version - but when the
tactic is just to release a new version (to pay for) which has bugs of
it's own and the only solution to that is to upgrade again... I tend to
get a bit skittish.

Thankfully Tim seems to understand developers. Smile
