Totally & utterly unrelated to any Elevatesoft product but I know this community is filled with clever people.

I decided to digitise our collection of DVDs to use on our new smart TV - found a nice toolchain to do it with and am well on with the project. The TV is a Panasonic with FireOS and the media browser lacks a little something once you have more than a few DVDs. I decided to set up a directory structure - easy to do but the FireOS browser flattens the structure making it awkward to navigate. My next thought was to partition the USB drive I'm using - again easy (but lengthy copying data back and forth). The next problem is I'm using a Seagate Expansion Drive - and that's the name shown in Windows Explorer for the drive. Obviously I created partition labels (eg BoxSets, TV Series) but the Panasonic displays connected devices with the full name so its trying to display Seagate Expansion Drive\BoxSets in a 10 character wide field. It doesn't work.

After all that - does anyone know of a utility to alter the device name in its firmware so I can get a display like X\BoxSets?

I can only say "Plex", which solved our situation in a sensible way. Why fight it?

Well I can think of a number of reasons, some of which may just me being uninformed:

1. There isn't a Plex app for FireFox OS - lots of people asking for one on the plex forums

2. I'd need to install a NAS or something to run plex on

3. Simplicity - I want something that's dead easy for the missus, there are only the two of us and we don't need to access things from multiple devices, or over the internet

4. Without downloading and trying, as far as I can tell from their website, the interface doesn't look good - flashy yes.

Go wider. Your computer can work as the Plex server. You can use a cheap HDMI stick or more capable things like Apple TV to run the display application. Or indeed Windows itself. But this is very off topic, so I'll leave it at that. I think don't constrain yourself to specific things, the telly is just a monitor, and you can do it easily really.

I do not believe this is possible (assuming we both are talking about
the same value which is USB bus reported device description - i.e.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff542369(v=vs.85).aspx)).

Your best bet would be to see if Fireos has a way of hiding this in
display instead.

I personally use Kodi (though not on FireOS) but they do seem to have
support for FireOS : http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_on_Fire_TV

Worth a try ?

Bearing in mind that the description is a user friendly as is the norm for MS I'd say yes that's what I'm talking about. I know its in the firmware and I was hoping someone knew of a utility to hack it.

I'm pretty sure (ie 407% positive) I can't do anything with FireFox OS and the TV doesn't provide anything I could use either Frown

That's a good try but "Amazon Fire TV" <> "FireFox OS"

I shouldn't have posted FireOS - I'm not sure where I picked it up as an abbreviation and I'd totally forgotten about the existence of the Amazon stick.

There doesn't seem to be any alternative to the built in media player - the plex forums have a 27 page thread basically asking plex to get one sorted.

I would be really surprised if this was possible - otherwise eBay would
be flooded with drives calling themselves the premium model from same
manufacturer since that field is the model usually.

Got it - i was surprised that Amazon would license their FireOS to
Panasonic so this makes lot more sense.

look like it's based on FireFox browser so only apps are html5/css style
ones (i.e. browser plugins) so yes Kodi or such would not be feasible.

I believe it's been discontinued as well so if you cannot find a decent
solution and this is a problem then getting a separate media player
(apple tv, roku, various android and other devices fanless devices)
might be way to go and you get more capability as well.

That's what i have basically - one of those minix android devices
running Kodi as well as bunch of other android apps.
