Win XP Local vs LAN access |

Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | We had bad weather yesterday, my micro UPSs were blipping on and off rapidly so I decided to do the sensible thing and turned the PCs off.
Bad move. When I turned back on this morning the notebook running XP that's used as my server refused to access the data locally. I can access from any other PC on the network but not this one which should be able to read its own disks. Since this machine is also the email server. My guess is that Windows decided (for reasons best know to itself) to stop using UNC paths and is translating everything to local paths. This is a disaster for a multi user ElevateDB application. I also tried installing EDBManager and using that to open anything - it locks as it tries to open the session. The only "solution" is to hold down the power button. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should kick windows to get it to play nicely before I give up and reinstall XP and everything? Roy Lambert |

Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | A lot more experimenting and the results are as follows:
1. I can access the database held in \\Medion\Business\Data from any other PC on the LAN using my app or EDBManager 2. I can't access the database held in \\Medion\Business\Data if the UNC path is used in session.LocalConfigPath on Medion (whole machine stuffed when I try and open the session) 3. I CAN access the database if I use a local path. (C:\Data) As far as I know its not permissions - Everyone can do anything to the data (theoretically). Arrrrrgh Roy Lambert |

Then start the notebook [server] without any connections wireless or patch leads. In either case leave the router off for at least 5 mins. Then switch off your notebook after its been complaining no connection found. Restart the router let it sit for a couple of minutes start the notebook[server] and hopefully it will be cured. One question tho is it XPPRO ? Rita |

>Are you seeing any error messages at all ? If not, what happens if you let >things sit for a while after you try to open a session ? I get very bored - nothing else That's both with EDBManager and my app. The really crazy part is the database path is still UNC but if I alter the LocalConfigPath to C:\.. it works. I'm going to try recovering the config file from backup and see what happens. If that fails its reformat and start again time. Fortunately not much s/w on this PC Roy Lambert |

I even tried a different minihub but as Catweasel would say "nothing works" >One question tho is it XPPRO ? No Home Roy Lambert |

Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | I finally remembered my backup strategy. Every day Acronis saves the datafiles and every Sunday it saves the entire disk. Copies the latest data to a safe haven, restored from last Sunday, copied the data back - fixed.
Couple of hours. I'd still like to know why Windows threw a wobbly though Roy Lambert |

[[[for uk non residents if there are such people. Broadmoor is a mental health prison]]] Stuff like that is classic windows, like the MK plugtops in a datacentre throwing the surge switch on early Win2000 racks. The Linux racks didnt flinch. I thought your idea to re-install windows was a bit drastic tho. Surely you can get a copy of XPPro it is great as a server. Rita |

Malcolm Taylor | Hi Roy
I don't have an answer to your particular issue but I too was clobbered by that wind, rain, sleet and snow. I was just on the snow line so got rain for 5 days and sleet/snow for 4 nights. Yuk! I had some power fluctuations but decided to trust my UPSes - I have a server that accepts and forwards competition entries World-wide so it should be up 24/7 if possible. Woke up one morning to find I had no Internet Connection and my W2003 server was trying to restart but never quite managing. Everything else seemed OK. In the end I had to power-down my Cable Modem and router then start each in turn. Needed three attempts to get the CM to connect and get a (new) IP address. Then the router did its thing and finally I got the server to boot all the way up. Late breakfast! Malcolm |

>I had some power fluctuations but decided to trust my UPSes That is going to be my solution next time, but I'm sure Windows will get me some other way instead Roy Lambert |
