It's always the same with small start-ups and people with vision, without the encumbrance of communication. They have (or he/she has) about ten times the productive and creative energy (conservatively put) of a single developer put in an assigned team. It'd be a very interesting study, that tries to find a solution to this problem. I think the way it goes at the moment, mostly, is that these lone supermen develop their wonders, and then get noticed by the larger entity, get swallowed, and, of course, mildly frustrated, while their product gets into the hands of a "committee." I don't know if Google found a solution to this. I think they are trying to nurture creativity inside the company, but the only awesome thing I saw coming out of Google is Google Earth, at the moment. Maybe there's a handful of other stuff, but nothing like what 10,000 (lone) Tim Youngs would produce (which probably would involve teleportation and parallel universes). Fascinating subject. |

Teleportation - fine; parallel universes, even though the concept comes from quantum physics I just can't get my head round, and apart from a few spoof stories which are good neither can the vast majority of SF writers. But they're integrating all sorts of database toys in there, and it might save them a lot of resources and time to just put Elevisam in there and bloody start concentrating on getting the bugs out of all the friggin' rest. |
