Nor sure how many are following EMB forums but a article there (now
confirmed it seems) indicates the XE3 just got more expensive"

link : https://forums.embarcadero.com/thread.jspa?threadID=76082

In summary it looks like a Pro SKU of Delphi as of XE2 no longer allows
C/S DB access - so DBISAM and EDB C/S users will need to fork out for
either the C/S Client Pack or higher level SKU.
This is a license issue so even though DBISAM/EDB are pure pascal and
will use nothing from the C/S pack you still need it to be legit.

Existing users on XE2 + SA are grandfathered in so for most of us the
impact is minimal/none but if you need new licenses or maybe are
thinking of upgrading from D7 or D2007 or such then price just went up.

I have no problem for EMB charging for technologies they create or
components they want to sell but this is low.

I'm planning to attend the World Tour in Toronto next week and i expect
it to be interesting at least from crowd reactions aspect.

The entire non-tech newsgroup is exploding over this. And I have read
that other third-parties are threatening to withdraw Delphi support if
this is final.

This is really a desperate measure and certainly not a good sign wrt
the health of EMBT. I also strongly fear for the quality of XE3.

I don't remember whether ElevateDB works with FPC?

You have to wonder where Embarcadero's focus is...

Do they make decisions based on increasing their user base and putting
out quality products based on what is required in this quickly changing
industry...

OR do they make decisions based on short term profits and dangling a
carrot full of promises in front of our noses, never letting us quite
get a bite out of the carrot and asking us to upgrade on the promise of
a newer version with as many bugs as it's predecessor...

Just when it looks like the next version might have progressed we get
the same old story... Apparently iOS support for XE3 has also been
dropped, be it just for this version I'm not sure... Not that it effects
me directly, but alot of people appeared to be after the iOS / Android
support and this doesn't appear so in XE3.

Apparently if your an XE2 professional user and upgrade to XE3
professional you still get the license to develop client / server apps,
but that's not going to help grow their user base and any companies
buying new licenses as they employ new developers may have to fork out
for a separate C/S add on, even if using C/S 3rd party components.

I guess only time will tell as we hear news back from the World Tour
shortly.

Needless to say there appears to be a lot of disgruntled users out there.

It's nothing less than poaching on third-parties' territory. They don't
bring anything to the table, they just decided to take. An outrage is
perfectly in order.

And don't you just love their professional way of communicating with
customers.

It appears to be no less than the same level of consciousness operating
that brought about the financial crash.

You'd think they would look a little further ahead than the next pay day
and worry about the product, if the product does what it's advertised
as, good value and what people want, then the rest comes naturally.

It appears from what I've heard they are not only going to alienate
existing clients and potential new ones, but also the 3rd party software
companies that bring alot of sales to Embarcadero's table.

I doubt I'd be using C++ Builder XE2 where it not for the fantastic
journey I've had with Elevates DBISAM and now ElevateDB. I would of
moved development to another environment a number of years back.

+1!

Third-parties are the flesh of their framework, if not the backbone for
some.

I had a read of the thread. There's some mighty pissed off customers there. I do hope EMB listens.

Needless to say, I'd be extremely interested to hear what Tim thinks about all of this.

He's probably thinking "just developed EWB in time" Opening up another revenue stream that has nothing (much) to do with database components is a very good idea (even if this isn't true).

I've just received my buy now email from EMB and, clicking through the buy online link, no mention of the c/s pack

Just for a bit of fun they can't even get their product codes right:

RAD STUDIO XE2
Embarcadero® RAD Studio XE3 is your developer force multiplier and the fastest way to build data-rich, visually engaging applications for Windows 8, Mac, .NET, Web and mobile.
