I'm getting both horizontal and vertical scroll bars on the bit between the treeview and the main pane when I'm at the session level. Vertical one fine, horizontal one not needed.

That can sometimes happen - the vertical scrollbar causes the horizontal
scroll bar.  I'm not exactly sure how to correct it yet, but I've seen it a
few times.
