Thread Taking the plunge DBISAM V1 to ElevateDB
Fri, Jun 4 2010 9:47 PMPermanent Link

Neil Huhta

Hello All:

I am finally taking the plunge and will be converting from dBISAM to
ElevateDB - it has been more then 10 years - looking forward to the learning
process - expecting about a 30 day process to implement all of the new
features.

I'll be interested in how it goes. My bet would be that the initial conversion from DBISAM V1 to ElevateDB V2.03b14 should be easier than mine from V4 to V1.0 but you have 10 years worth of habits to overcome so maybe not.

Here's my timetable for you:

Day 1 - convert components
Day 2&3 - fix problems
Day 4 onwards - implement new go faster stripes etc

My upgrade is much more complex. First - I am moving from Delphi 5 to
Delphi 7. To accomplish this, i must replace all obsolete components that
disappeared over the past 10 years. Plus - I am taking a few inhouse that i
dont want to rely on (such as a replacement for the Raize DBCheckbox). I
will be replacing the dream company form designer and object inspector with
ones from Greatis. Once that is done, I will migrate to Delphi 7. In Delphi
7, i will move from report builder 6 to reportbuilder 12, then and only then
will i be ready to tackle the move to ElevateDB. Total time 2 weeks.

then i need to fix stuff such as windows7 true compliance, adding screen
scalability, adding a real help system, and rewriting install scripts - 7 -
10 days.

In elevatedb - I expect to take 7 days to study elevatedb so i understand
its power, app conversion 7 days without using all the new stuff. I have a
file updater program - it takes a picture of the new database structure to
be associated with an update and does an automatic restructure when the new
version is deployed - this is based on tfielddefs and needs a complete
rewrite to be sql based - my guess is 5 - 7 days to upgrade that tool. Next
i add 3 days to plan what areas of my code can take advantage of the new
features such as triggers, stored procedures, and referential integrity.
Then 14 days to code all of those bad boys. Total time 30 days.

Finally, i need to fix some referential integrity issues, customer
linkages, etc 14 days. Then I will deploy to 100+ customers where the true
test will be. Once that settles,

my final task is to remove the Putersoft Filterbox (which i LOVE) and get a
suitable replacement, then i move to Delphi 2010 and redeploy - but this
redeployment will be 100% automated.

Last step is a vacation.

then on to developing my accounting app

whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

That sounds even worse than mine. I'd already migrated to D2006, but was partway through a major rewrite when I decided to buy the TMS components and then decided to move to ElevateDB. I'm now working on removing the TMS db aware grid.

For form scaling I recommend ElasticForm - good product, support if you can actually contact Claudia Peck is good, but contacting her is a nightmare. I've used it since D4 and upgraded it each time myself.

I remember puterSoft filterbox. I just couldn't get it to do the simple things I wanted and ended up rolling my own.

I switched from Delphi5 to Delphi2007 and from DBISAM to EDB at the same
time.
Lots of problems - but they were all solved and I can say: it's worth
all the time and trouble.

If you have any questions in detail - just ask them.

I think you'll find the conversion worth it from the many angles you're taking.  Just take your time.

Just am update,

I am still working on removing 3rd party tools for the move to Delphi 7.
Im guessing I'll be in D7 in about 2 weeks. I need to convert Reportbuilder
up several versions & upgrade or replace Raize - then I will have completed
the D7 upgrade.

Once I am on D7 - I will switch everything to EDB - so I am 2 months and
2 weeks out.
