Excuse my windows-centric Linux-newbie-ness.

Working for a client who's main file-server is Linux. I would prefer to stick my EDB database files on that server & have the EDBSRVR running there, but I am pretty sure this is impossible. If there is a Linux-runnable-EDBSRVR I would be grateful to be pointed at it.

I guess I can run the Server on any other machine & access files on the server ... then use this other machine as the server for everyone else on the network.

Is that the best solution?

My Linux server has a Linux file-system (naturally enough) so my DB path is something like:

/var/flexshare/shares/[some other stuff]

I am sharing this on Windows & can then connect to EDB in non-Client Server mode, but it is slow. Also without EDBSRVR running I can't get things like backup JOBs to run regularly.

Finally: if the EDBSRVR is running on a Windows machine, accessing the database on the Linux machine I am guessing this may actually be _slower_ (or a similar speed) than just using file-access on each machine.

... wow, the Windows machine running EDBSRVR reading & writing from the files on the Linux box is really fast!

Actually easy to use the Linux box to hold all the files & access this way.

It would still be nicer to have EDBSRVR actually running on the main server though!

Sorry Roy ... I'm too much of a Linux newbie to understand what WINE is (but I'll Google it now to figure it out ...).

An issue is that the server is run pretty tightly, running the EDBSRVR with WINE means adding additional stuff & reconfiguring the server my customer isn't going to be terribly happy to do this, but I'll see how it goes.

We did some of testing a while back and edbsrvr ran just fine under Linux. Don't have any production customers on it though at the moment so not sure on long-term stability though edbsrvr is very light in terms of win32 calls (no UI) so i would expect it work just fine.

However if system is locked down then it a problem - you would need to install packages appropriate to the distribution. As i recall there was no need to reconfigure anything but packages would be needed.
You can check if they already have it - some distros do have wine as part of standard install
